5.0 out of 5 stars "Once, we were gods!", 24 Dec 2008
By James MacMillan (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I only recieved this book last night, so this review is based on a quick skim read. I thought it was worth mentioning what is included to give others a heads up.

The book is very well presented, the hardcover making a big difference. The first chapter gives some vague information on the dark star that haunts the sector, and the next three chapters cover each of the Ordos and give several examples each of some of the organisations they face, as well as general details on the ordos activities. The book also discusses cults in general, typical types of organisation and gives stats for sample badguys. The last chapter deals with some of the most notorious of the calix badguys.

The chapter that deals with Ordo Hereticus includes rules for untouchables as well as some new psychic powers. Ordo Xenos has some alien stats as well as some xenos tech (Eldar shuriken weapons, H'rund rifle, etc) and Ordo Malleus includes rules for sorcery (a variation of psychic powers) and summoning deamons. There are also rules for specific NPC talents and generating cult leaders.

The background in the book is fantastic, going into a decent amount of background on the cults and their involvements in past events (this gives extra details on things like the Tranch war, etc). Unfortunatley, a portion of the artwork is lifted straight from other books, but the stuff that is new is very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but missing the essentials!, 20 Jan 2009
By DarrylS "darryl" (Staffordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
After waiting several months more than expected, my copy of Dark Heresy: Disciples of the Dark Gods turned up today.

The book is, just like the others in the Dark Heresy series, is beautifully presented, following the same format of the core rulebook.

The book is split into seven chapters, A chapter of background, a chapter each for the three Ordos (Hereticus, Xenos and Malleus) within the Inquisition, a chapter outlining several new characters within the background of the Calixis Sector, and a new adventure.

Where this book lacks is in the new data presented - whilst there are new weapon types given, such as the Shuriken Catapult, the races are curiously missing - the new races introduced in the Xenos chapter are not any of the 'major' races such as Eldar, Ork, Tyranid or Necron. This is also the case within the Malleus chapter - no description of any of the major Chaos Gods. This, in my opinion is where the book lets itself down - with such a rich background, FFG / GW could have given a breif overview of each, and still managed to do better - whereas, the end result here relies on the GM to have a good working knowledge of the 40k setting, without any help.

All in all, a great book for those who are used to the 40k Universe, but lackign for those who are not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 3 Jun 2009
By Mr. Thomas D. Powell (Cardiff) - See all my reviews

This book is not worth it's rather hefty price at all. Although some GM's may like the book for its hints at using a Chaos Cult in their adventures, I have created many myself more malign and detailed than those contained in this rather disappointing and overly 'pretty' book.
