Published in 2008, AIR DISASTERS is part of Lerner Publications' 'Disasters Up Close' series. Written by Michael and Mary Woods, AIR DISASTERS provides an informative if sobering look at famous air crashes aimed at readers 9-12.
Like other titles in the series, AIR DISASTERS tops off at 64 pages. The book is divided into six chapters - What Is An Air Disaster, Recipe for Disaster, Disaster Danger Zones, Measuring the Menace, Getting Help Fast and The Future - along with appendices (a timeline, glossary, recommended readings and so on). The Woods' discuss famous crashes such as the 9/11 attacks, the Concorde crash, Lockerbie, the Hindenberg, JAL 123 and the Grand Canyon mid-air. They explain why different crashes happened, the human toll, how crashes are investigated, survivability in a crash, research into making aircraft safer, etc.
Reminiscences from survivors are included and put a human face on those tragedies. Likewise, looking at the photographs of the shattered remains of all those various aircraft hammers home the point that people died. I'm not sure how children 9-10 might react to this book but those 11-12 should be able to handle the somber subject.
All in all, AIR DISASTERS is an informative and well-illustrated summary of the dangers of flight. Recommended.
