Welcome to Book 4 in Japan's hottest series, the international phenomenon known as Haruhism! --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

What if you woke up one morning, and everything changed?

It's one week before Christmas Eve, and Haruhi and the S.O.S. Brigade (a club for her high school's strangest and most extraordinary students) are gearing up for holiday festivities. But just before the fun kicks off, Kyon, the only 'normal' member, wakes up in a weird alternate dimension, one where Haruhi attends another school entirely, Nagato the time travelling robot is just an ordinary human, and Mikuru (the cute girl of Kyon's dreams) doesn't even recognize him - in other words, S.O.S. Brigade never existed.

The only clue Kyon can find is a bookmark left by the robot version of Nagato, which leads him on a quest back in time, where he interacts with the storyline from 'Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody', a short story from the previous Haruhi book, The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya.

This fun and quirky holiday tale is reminiscent of A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life.

A new world? 12 Nov 2010
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
`The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya' is the fourth book in the `Haruhi Suzumiya' series and is easily my favourite book of the series so far.

With Christmas approaching Haruhi and the SOS Brigade are planning a party, that is until one morning when Kyon wakes up and the world has been changed beyond recognition. In this new world the SOS Brigade doesn't exist, Mikuru and Nagato are normal human schoolgirls and nobody has ever heard of Itsuki Koizumi or Haruhi Suzumiya. Only Kyon knows that the world has been changed and he must find out what happened and put it right or he will be trapped in this new world for ever.

As I have already said, `Disappearance' is easily mu favourite book of the `Haruhi Suzumiya' series so far and I would even say that it is probably one of my top five all-time favourite books. The plot is complicated but it is still relatively easy to follow and some of the twists are also quite nicely done. The book is very well written and I cannot fault the translation either. The book is just as funny as the others in the series and it is definitely a very compulsive read.

While I would say that this book and the `Haruhi Suzumiya' series in general are not to everyone's taste, I personally love this book and the series and I can definitely see why this book was chosen to be made into a movie. If you liked the other books in the series then `Disappearance' is a must read.

To be honest, I had been pretty disappointed in the haruhi light novels up until now. This latest instalment however, proves to be a brilliant addition to the series.

I started watching the haruhi suzumiya anime round about the time it came out. It was new, hilarious and told a great story in it's 14 episode run. However, it ended too quickly. By the time they announced a second season I was thrilled, only to find it to have messed up what could have been a great concept. I think many other people were in the same boat I was in; they found the first series great, only to be terribly disappointed by the second. After a while though, I decided to pick up the books to see if they were any good, and whilst they weren't bad, they didn't really go over any plot that hadn't been covered in the anime already. What I had really hoped for out of the books was new content.

This all changes with 'the disappearance'. It abandons the four or five collected short stories structure the previous novels had for one continuous story arc, which works brilliantly. The story is completely new and is what I and many other haruhi fans have wanted for a long time. If you were left hanging after the first season of the anime with a desire for more, this is it. It took a while to get a release over here, but it's out now, and at a more than reasonable price. If you have liked any of the haruhi franchise so far, then you should get this immediately. Or go watch the movie, which is pretty much the same as the book. However, the movie won't be officially released here for quite a few months, so if you want to avoid downloading it, it's worth picking up this book.

My only complaint, if any, is that it's too short. With it taking just around 4-5 hours to read. However, this is just a minor complaint about an otherwise flawless book. Well, flawless if you're already familiar with the haruhi universe and characters. In no way would I recommend picking up the series from here. What makes this book so great is the way it works off of the reader's familiarity of the characters and the universe it's set in, rewarding the reader for a thorough understanding of previous events in the series.
This is not a book for someone who is not aqquainted with the world of haruhi suzumiya. If you are in no way familiar with the franchise, I would advise to- watch the first season of the anime, then most of the second season (it's worth skipping the second through seventh episodes of the endless eight arc of the second season, only watching the first and last episodes of that arc), then to read this.
So all in all, a really good book. Only for fans though. The follow up that everybody has been waiting for, for a long long time. It's just a shame we're going to have to wait even longer for the release of the movie or the next light novel over here. But that's the one thing I've become accustomed to due to being a haruhi fan: having to wait a god-awful amount of time for new content.

A Return to Glory 23 Oct 2010
By Sammy Swartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
After two decidedly mediocre novels, Haruhi Suzumiya returns in a fourth installment that finally approaches the quality of author Nagaru Tanigawa's brilliant original. In a "It's a Wonderful Life" style twist, poor Kyon awakes one morning to a world mysteriously different from the one he left the night before. Among other things, his SOS Brigade friends no longer recognize him, Haruhi no longer goes to his school, and everyone and everything appears to be...normal! And the plot thickens from there.

The beauty of this story is how effectively it works on different levels. In one sense, it's a mystery, with the reader following Kyon as he searches for the cause behind his predicament. But it's also a tale of self-discovery for Kyon as he realizes, perhaps too late, the value of what he once had. And finally, it's a work of philosophy and moral complexity, as Kyon must ultimately choose whether to help convert the world back to its original state or simply leave well enough alone. Of course, the series' humor, romantic innuendo, and quantum conundrums also return, adding extra spice to an already engrossing tale. Even the translation work seems improved over previous installments.

That said, fans expecting a work of sheer hilarity will not find one here. While there are still some chuckles to be had, this story is an altogether more somber work than what the series has previously seen. Furthermore, the story's heavy emphasis on time-traveling leave it open to certain plot holes that are never explained to complete satisfaction. And lastly, the book concludes with a long-winded finale that still somehow manages, intentionally or not, to leave certain questions unanswered. Fortunately, these complaints are but nitpicks in an otherwise sublime read.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a fine purchase for any fan of the franchise. The only real pity is that, as a light novel, it's a ride that ends all too soon.

Kyon rhymes with John. 30 Oct 2010
By Michael Hardesty - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Kyon not only narrates the volume, as he does all of them, but takes the central role. As the title suggests Haruhi has disappeared. Kyon must figure out the mystery and decided how, and ultimately if he should fix it. This isn't a novel you should start with if you haven't read any of the stories before, as it refers back to all three of the previous novels. Mr. Tanigawa has done an exceptional job of making a these stories overlap and mesh together while keeping the reader completely involved and wanting to turn the next page.

This book as well as the first three (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya and the The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya) are quick and fun to read and I highly recommend the whole series, although this is my favorite so far. I am also highly anticipating the movie that is based on this fourth light novel.
Far better than the previous volume!! 26 Oct 2011
By ChibiNeko - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I wasn't all that thrilled with the last book in this series, so I took a long break from reading the light novels just so I could clear my head. I have to admit that if I hadn't already had this book sitting on my shelf, I might not have started back in on the series but now I'm glad that I have. This book was far better than book three was.

What I liked most about this entry was that it addressed the idea of what would happen if Haruhi was never around. Would Kyon really be enjoying his life? Would he still be able to be around the well-endowed Asahina? What would Haruhi be like? I'm glad to say that this book showed a pretty entertaining view of another world and that it's much more engaging and fun than the previous book.

The only downfall is that due to the typical light novel length, the story didn't go into as much detail as I'd want. The alternate world does give us a great look into the main characters, but only a brief one. I kind of wouldn't mind seeing more of that world and how the characters would interact with one another. (Here's hoping that world gets a spin off much like the Evangelion series has spun off of its alternate universes.)

If you're like me and have been sitting on the fence about this book, it's worth reading and diving into the series again. If you're a fan then you've probably already got this book or have it on order. If not, then this is something you've got to have.
