To be honest, I had been pretty disappointed in the haruhi light novels up until now. This latest instalment however, proves to be a brilliant addition to the series.
I started watching the haruhi suzumiya anime round about the time it came out. It was new, hilarious and told a great story in it's 14 episode run. However, it ended too quickly. By the time they announced a second season I was thrilled, only to find it to have messed up what could have been a great concept. I think many other people were in the same boat I was in; they found the first series great, only to be terribly disappointed by the second. After a while though, I decided to pick up the books to see if they were any good, and whilst they weren't bad, they didn't really go over any plot that hadn't been covered in the anime already. What I had really hoped for out of the books was new content.
This all changes with 'the disappearance'. It abandons the four or five collected short stories structure the previous novels had for one continuous story arc, which works brilliantly. The story is completely new and is what I and many other haruhi fans have wanted for a long time. If you were left hanging after the first season of the anime with a desire for more, this is it. It took a while to get a release over here, but it's out now, and at a more than reasonable price. If you have liked any of the haruhi franchise so far, then you should get this immediately. Or go watch the movie, which is pretty much the same as the book. However, the movie won't be officially released here for quite a few months, so if you want to avoid downloading it, it's worth picking up this book.
My only complaint, if any, is that it's too short. With it taking just around 4-5 hours to read. However, this is just a minor complaint about an otherwise flawless book. Well, flawless if you're already familiar with the haruhi universe and characters. In no way would I recommend picking up the series from here. What makes this book so great is the way it works off of the reader's familiarity of the characters and the universe it's set in, rewarding the reader for a thorough understanding of previous events in the series.
This is not a book for someone who is not aqquainted with the world of haruhi suzumiya. If you are in no way familiar with the franchise, I would advise to- watch the first season of the anime, then most of the second season (it's worth skipping the second through seventh episodes of the endless eight arc of the second season, only watching the first and last episodes of that arc), then to read this.
So all in all, a really good book. Only for fans though. The follow up that everybody has been waiting for, for a long long time. It's just a shame we're going to have to wait even longer for the release of the movie or the next light novel over here. But that's the one thing I've become accustomed to due to being a haruhi fan: having to wait a god-awful amount of time for new content.
