3.0 out of 5 stars Good in Parts but Not in Others 24 July 2014
By DJF
Format:Paperback
There are 2 main characters in this book - Tammy & Emily Marr. Tammy is wandering the world when she ends up in a small town in France with no money & no friends. She sees Emmie leaving her house with a rucksack & hears her entry code. Thinking she has left for a while Tammy enters to stay the night. Emmie hasn't gone for a night & arrives back. Emmie is a lady with a past which we, the readers, learn about but which Tammy doesn't discover until later in the book. We follow Emmie & Tammy's lives in France, Emily's past & then move on to the future when Tammy tries to solve the injustices which she feels have been done to Emmie/Emily.
This book was very slow to begin with. There is a lot of back story concerning Emily's relationship with a married man, Arthur Woodhall. We learn a little about Tammy's past including her affair with a married man. At this point in the story neither of these women appear to be particularly pleasant. Neither of them sees anything wrong in their behaviour or the behaviour that it leads to - in Emily's case lying to get time off work to meet Arthur and missing time with her dying Father. I just couldn't take to either of these women which made me reluctant to continue with the book. There does need to be a character to like to enable the reader empathise with the story but unfortunately the only likeable characters are very much minor bit players.
There is, however, a very interesting section in the middle of the book which made me wish to continue. Following various events (which I won't detail as it would spoil the story) Emily Marr becomes the subject of a media and social media witch hunt. She is seen as a vicious and devious woman who would stop at nothing to break up Arthur's family.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! 14 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't wait to get this book all to myself - I've loved Louise Candlish's other novels, so I saved this for my holiday reading. It's just as beautifully written as her other books, with emotional highs and lows, and twists and surprises along the way. I don't want to spoil a thing about it, so will just say that it deals with really relevant issues at a personal level and at a bigger societal level too. The characters manage to be believable and feel real, but aren't predictable at all. It has some jaw-dropping moments, so give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 1 Aug 2013
By Kate
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a compelling read, the kind of book you don't want to end. The emotions are intense, the story is intriguing, the atmosphere is full of suspense with clever twists and turns - no way did I see the big one coming. I couldn't put it down and continued to read it even when feeding the cat or shelling peas for dinner. Ms Candlish vividly brings to life her two main voices - Emily and Tabby - with exquisite writing and an emotional honesty that is both gruelling and exhilarating. Ruthlessly their pretences and self-delusion are stripped away. I loved them both and was gripped by the story of their growing friendship. Don't miss this one - it's a brilliant read.

A very readable book. Characters were interesting and the story. Wove them together well. Not one of Louise Candlishs best stories but a very good read for all that.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpectedly good 17 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I thought this book would just be a nice little story but it was unexpectedly good. I enjoyed it so much. So cleverly written with a super twist at the end. Easy to read and a real page turner. I have now bought other books by the author and they are just as good. I'm definitely a Louise Candlish fan.

Enjoyable to read with a modern theme. It's true that there are rather a lot of loose ends left dangling but I guess that's life!
