Format: Paperback
One of Hunter's few pure crime novels, this is filled with his trademarks - relentless narrative, explosive action, obsessive firearm detailing, and most importantly his wrenching, probing characterisation. It features all his recurrent themes and motifs - desperate, dangerous men wracked by demons, drawn to violence and self-destruction. Guilt, honour and betrayal lay scattered amidst the hardcore action and violence.
Hunter produces a flawless crime novel, with a depth and resonance greater than most 'literary' fiction. Featuring possibly the most memorable opening line in modern literature, this is breakneck writing delivered by a poet. Pure genius.

Having never read a book by this author before, I dont think I could have chosen a better one to start with. Admittedly the language is a bit disconcerting, (right from the very first sentence!), but as you get in to the book, the language just seems to suit the story. I can only sum up this book by saying it is the first book in a VERY long time to literally set my heart racing, I couldn't bear to put it down. If you are after a cracking read you could do far worse.

Format: Paperback
I was drawn to reading Dirty White Boys after I read the wonderful Time to Hunt. Although not as good as Time to Hunt, Dirty White Boys is a brilliant thriller. Hunter balances suspense, action and humour with ease as the plot develops with unexpected twists. The novel seems to advance with a chilling reality and has a common-sense feel to the writing. There are no amazing aspects which could only be real in fiction. The story seems like a true account of life. As for the fighting scenes, reading Dirty White Boys, I did not feel like I was watching the shootout, I felt like I was there dodging the bullets and sensing the pain! As usual Hunter has researched the life in Oklahoma State so he can convey it like he has lived there his whole life. There is also the aspect of Bud Pewtie's family relationship, a relationship which I thought was just there to show us his life. Until the climax. If you want a thriller that is relistic, with battles between crazy characters, and an underlying psychological feel, then this is for you.

This is a great book - two formidable foes, one a cop the other a villain and his gang of twisted side kicks. Almost like 'Heat' - the action sequences were fantastic and very well written. Entertaining, fast paced and gripping throughout. Believable and exciting - thrilling and as such, easy to read as you just have to know what happens next. A superb book and a great intro into the books of Stephen Hunter. Deserves the high ratings.
