Scorchin' reggae...., 4 April 2006
Yes, there is a barrell full of ska and reggae bands out there, and yes, some better than others..if you're interested in finding out more, but have been put off anything since 2 tone, or the original 60's sounds, by wacky kids stuff, lame 2 tone clones, or punk variations, the Aggrolites, along with the likes of Hepcat and the Slackers, are bands you should invest in.....they raise the bar in terms of quality. Songs, style, cool, the whole package...no cheesy checkered album covers, no cover versions, no shades, no Blink 182 with horns. Avoiding all cliches of 2 tone, ska or ska punk, these three bands are the top of the tree, all with their own flavour....the Slackers, one of the hardest working bands ,are blessed with the gritty New York voice of Vic, and pounding tunes; Hepcat have LA cool by the bucketload, sweet vocals and 60's style to die for.... The Aggrolites have no horns, no ska....strictly organ drenched reggae, with funky singer Jesse, raw and captivating. Great songs, and an ability to be tighter than you could believe...this first album is a must, coming out before their first Euro tour, and putting a stake in the ground, the opening drum sound will blow you away if you like the snare to sound like a dustbin...it's fantastic! It's like the Upsetters have returned with James Brown..and then live you also get the pure energy of punk, a four peice kicking out like the Clash..have you ever witnessed a bass player getting around the stage like J??...it's amazing. Now signed to major Hellcat( no coincidence that Hepcat and the Slackers are also signed to the same label)....watch em grow.
