Product Description

Deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada, where the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil. Through the eyes of scientists, big oil officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists, and aboriginal citizens directly impacted by the largest industrial project on the planet today, the filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to see the emotional and irreversible toll this black gold rush fueled by America s addiction to oil is taking on our planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars More people need to know! 30 April 2011
Excellent film highlighting one of the major ecological disasters unfolding in our time. Good in depth look at all the associated cost of Tar Sands oil production in Alberta Canada. The only way it will be resolved is through greater public awareness such as this film to ultimately change consumer behaviour and move to the ever growing alternatives available to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. As you can see this film certainly gets you thinking 10/10!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dirty Oil (DVD 2009) 1 Feb 2011
By Smithy
I think this is a very important film. We are "told" by Govt ministers that this is not dirty oil. We are also "told" there are world class environmental restraints imposed upon this enormous project. The film quickly proves that these statements are totally untrue. These so-called restrictions are not enforced, and worse, are self governed by the companies involved.

This documentary exposes much of which is not reaching the main stream news. Dirty Oil tells us exactly how it is----Dirty; and the truth is not pretty. An added bonus in the DVD is a formerly produced half hour documentary titled "Down Stream." The film highlights a classic David and Goliath situation revealing a gross invasion of the rights of the indigenous people, as well as pointing out the very real pollution problems that are already happening and will continue to happen for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Independent reporting at its best 24 Nov 2010
A brilliant portrayal of the secretive world of the mining industry. The film highlights the aggressive profit hunting of large multi-national corporations who care very little for the 'little' people yet have such political power that this doesn't matter. Very good documentary indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Didnt know how big an issue it was ... 10 Feb 2011
I just finished watching the dvd. It was very interesting, as I'd not actually looked into Alberta tar sands to oil production at all before ... I thought the area was barren waste land with tar sands ... so to see what it is really like, and the scale of destruction ... very worrying.

Definitely worth watching (and then hopefully taking on reducing your oil usage etc). The quality seemed a bit up and down (not technical quality, just the quality of the doco).
