Review

Book of the Week - "well-researched history of the chants and ditties espoused by football crowds"--Simon Redfern, The Independent

"Marshall's thesis is nicely researched, well considered and neatly paced. This is a man who understands what it is to be a supporter." --Jim White, The Daily Telegraph

"The best book on the subject - by far. Tim gets it." --Eamonn Holmes

"Serious but hilarious." --The Sun

"I love football chants, and Tim Marshall has done an excellent job of assembling and analysing some of the best ones." --Robert Crampton, The Times

"A well researched book. It is no in way a dry study, as Marshall shows he is a true football supporter who understands the culture ... There is a great deal of humour throughout." --Football Book Reviews

An astonishingly well researched work in what is – let's face it – a pretty informal field. How Tim managed to find out all this stuff is a mystery. He can't have interviewed ten million people, surely? Whatever, his knowledge is immense, his insights wise. And, wherever possible, kindly. The writing is sharp, witty and accessible. So if you love football, but seriously wonder about some of your fellow fans, here's your bible. Buy it, READ it, and p*ss on all b*st*rds ....!

I really enjoyed this. Not just a meticulously researched catalogue of some of the best, and funniest, chants from around the football grounds of Britain, but also a fascinating study of how those chants have reflected British society through the years.
It becomes fairly obvious where the author's club loyalties lie but pretty much every team in Britain gets a mention - 'Swing Low, Sweet Halibut' is a highlight from Grimsby Town.
A must-read for anyone who enjoys a Saturday afternoon on the terraces.
Recommended.

Apart from finding out that the well known tune 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' was originally a Grimsby chant called 'Swing Low Sweet Halibut' (er ahem joke - was t'other way around) ...
AND ..that Laurel and Hardy had a hand in Sheffield Wednesday's 'Honolulu Wednesday', I also found out that Elgar wrote the first chant for Wolves FC. Loads of other similar gems in this book which is fun, has a conversational-style and is a fascinating read. Hats (and scarves) off to the author!
