In these days of overblown 'power ballads' masquerading as country it is perhaps worth remembering that the genre was originally the music of the poor whites. Not unsurprisingly, black singers in the southern states found common ground and tapped into the huge reservoir of songs. Trikont have put together this compendium of mostly sixties and seventies efforts. The result is a fine collection eschewing straight covers and concentrating on those individuals who imbued the songs with raw emotion. Highlights include the wonderful Ella Washington (He Called Me Baby), Etta James and Joe Simon. Indeed the only duff note is sounded by the Godfather Of Soul himself on an overwrought and unsatisfying rendition of Your Cheatin' Heart.

Inspired! 7 April 2008

This is one of the best purchases in made in music in the last few years. Kept in heavy rotation for months, always turning it up loud for James Brown covering Hank William and Candi Staton covering Tammy Wynette. Like they use to say All Killer! No Filler!

Get down in the country.

What a great idea for an album. I have an old Hi Records CD compilation with a similar theme (R&B and Soul artists doing country tunes) but this collection is even better. Many older listeners will recall the landmark album by Ray Charles that used this approach, "Modern Sounds in Country and Western", but what Brother Ray was doing, and later Charley Pride, was only a fraction of what other black singers were doing; either covering country tunes, or totally immersed in the genre. On this compilation yet get the gifted big-name "dabblers" such as Joe Simon, Etta James, Betty LaVette (who sings a stunning version of "What Condition my Condition Is In"), Bobby Womack, Pointer Sisters, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield (the amazing title track to this set), and Solomon Burke. Plus, there are obscure artists that pretty much stuck to country music, despite the color of their skin, such as Roscoe Shelton, Stoney Edwards ("She's My Rock" is one of this CD's highlights), and Otis Williams. Some really mind-blowing stuff on here. Well worth the purchase.

This is a superb album. Just get the damn thing! It's great.

My favorite is Andre Williams and 2 Star Tabernacle's "Jet Black Daddy Lilly White Mama." Isn't that where all the best American music comes from!
