Profound filth,

Always a good read, Penny Birch has outdone herself this time. The sex is every bit as dirty as promised and the characters it takes place among are believable, even involving. That is something special in this territory. The first-person narrator Natasha is a compulsive fantasist driven to pursue ever greater levels of obscenity. All it takes is a brief encounter with a hugely fat man in a restaurant to launch her, through a case of mistaken identity, into an entanglement with the gross but oddly endearing Monty. Add to the mix the arrogant Damon who won't take no for an answer and Gabrielle, the neat and formal therapist with a shameful secret and you have all the ingredients for a rollicking tale of sexual (mis)doings. The set pieces are gloriously filthy - if you are remotely squeamish be warned - but the novel is more than just a string of them, underpinned as it is by a real understanding of the complex logic of staged humiliation. Readers able to browse a copy of the book will have no need of this review or any other, since page 1 starts as it means to go on with the heroine's in-your-face account of the joys of an enema....

Penny has really excelled herself with this one. Not only is it absolutely, unapologetically filthy, but it is also a good story, with the plot and the sex beautifully woven together, as only she can. I also love it because it's so un-PC, and so irreverent to all we're taught to respect, including the state of our knickers. So if you like your sex cosmopolitan clean, don't even think about it! Otherwise, this is the best!
