The first 30 or so mins of this film are classic Dirty Harry, plenty of action and some brilliant lines. Unfortunately the film slows down later on, with too many slow and sensitive bits for my liking. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not looking for mindless action in a film, I just mean that Clint (who directed this film) tries a bit too hard to inject meaning into the actions of Sandra Locke (his co-star and girlfriend).
Overall it is an enjoyable film with some outstanding one liners from Clint, though I admit I did press the fast forward button a few times in the second half.
The blu ray transfer is sharp, with some scenes looking like they were done today. However, some of the camera work is a bit blurry and out of focus. I would say a definite improvement over the DVD and definitely worth getting if you don't have it on DVD already. The sound is offered in 2.0, 5.1 and also 5.1 Dolby TrueHD. I used the TrueHD sound and found it good (although bizarrely quieter than the 5.1 track, I had to crank up the volume on my amp).

A great film to the series, great picture and sound quality, one gripe wheres the 'Dirty Harry Movies Trailer Gallery' its printed on the sleeve, it's on the other Dirty Harry Films (Blu ray) why not this one?
Is this disc a misprint or has the UK edition been short changed?

Redefining Harry

When I first saw SUDDEN IMPACT I thought Clint Eastwood had somehow sold out on the underlying essence of the character he had been portraying. He took the realistic base from the first three DIRTY HARRY films (DIRTY HARRY, MAGNUM FORCE and THE ENFORCER) and replaced it with some type of pseudo surrealistic parody that seemed so repulsive it bordered on bad taste to say the very least. However, after repeated viewing it started to grow on me and I actually wanted to watch it over and over. I couldn't get enough of it.
It certainly was not the same Dirty Harry but it had a very blunt approach for dealing with crime and criminals. In the first three films the bureaucrats constantly accused Harry of crossing the line yet the audience knew Harry was right and the bureaucrats were just a bunch of crybaby liberals (at least that's what the directors wanted us to think). In SUDDEN IMPACT Clint Eastwood is at the helm. Eastwood proposes a question to the audience: You like crazy? Do you want to see crazy? I'm going to give you crazy. Film making is a business and like a good businessman Eastwood gives his audience what they want. Director Eastwood is at his best here using a character he has portrayed, honed and chiseled out to take on an ever-changing world and society in moral decline.
Without artistic merit, this film would have been a failure. Eastwood is playing the auteur filmmaker here and he is very successful at it. This film is way ahead of its time. The fabric of a sane society is being pulled apart. Family values, if you like, are out the window. Eastwood collects the most vile, repugnant and repulsive villains for this film that literally defines the meaning of trailer trash. The Mafia hoodlums at the beginning of the film look like... choirboys compared to the bunch of wacko amusement park crazies he ends up exterminating by the film's end. If Eastwood had not directed this film with his offbeat humor and unconventional style, if he had played it as a straight drama, the critics would have screamed murder.

The best of the sequel so far

I think this is the best sequel so far. I think Magnum Force and The Enforcer was the poorest so far. With Dirty Harry being best and this film, Sudden Impact second best. This has at least more action and better story in my opinion than the mentioned previous 2.
I also enjoyed the character Ray the lesbian. Yes, i think she was a entertaining character. I liked the scene in the bar when Harry kicked her in the bum. That made me laugh. I didn`t expect that. Not the most original story i have watched, but it`ll do.
Picture quality: 4.5/5
I remember this had nearly reference quality. With grain looking natural and nice details and such. I certainly think it`s a bit step up from Dirty Harry.

I was quite impressed with the Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Harry`s Magnum has great bass and clarity. It just sends a smile across your face when you hear the most powerful handgun in world with that bass and rich clarity. Obviously new foley effects have replaced the original gunshot effects, but i don`t think they sound out at place at all. The film was originally mixed in Mono. The music which i also liked sounded great with clarity and bass.
