Product Description

Adultery, murder and dangerous love collide in Jessie Keane’s gritty debut novel.

For longer than she cares to remember Annie Bailey has lived in the shadow of her older sister Ruthie. Now Ruthie has her hands on Max Carter, the much feared head of the Carter family and a top class villain.

Seducing Max wasn't a problem, but the guilt, shame and anger of rejection afterwards was.

Thrown onto the streets Annie finds herself living with Celia, a wayward aunt with a shocking secret. As the months pass Annie's resourceful nature sees her mature and carve out a life for herself, albeit not legal. But if you play with fire, you can expect to get burned and her lavish new lifestyle and connections may be about to come crashing down around her.

Annie has unwittingly placed herself between two rival gangs and upset too many people, and these kind of people don't forget. But as everyone knows, Annie Bailey is no ordinary woman.

Having been a little disappointed with Martina Cole's past couple of books I decided to give a new author a try. The sticker on the cover stating "As good as Martina Cole or your money back" seemed to draw me in. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down. Just as others have stated I definitely think the book was as good as Martina Cole's early efforts. I'll be on the look out next year for Jessie Keane's new book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new writer 9 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
I was so excited when I picked this up - it reminded me of Martina Cole in her early days. The book didn't disappoint, I couldn't put it down. There were lots of twists and it wasn't at all predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for her next one. If you like Martina Cole, you'll like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Martina! 29 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of 4 books about the Carters. I read them all in the wrong order, reading the last one first, then the 3rd one and finally this one and then the 2nd one but it didn't matter as each book has it's own story. It is set in the East End and follows Annie Carter. This book tells how she met her husband who was the head of the Carter family. I couldn't put it down and read the 4 books one after the other. Am now starting on her other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 13 Aug 2011

Liked Martina Cole, so I thought i would give Jessie Keane a try. I was not disappointed, it is gripping from start to finish. The main character Annie is both vulnerable and strong and fights for what she believes in. This is a must read if you like this type of book. I have now red all the Annie Carter series and each one is just as good as the first.. It all starts here

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading ! 31 Oct 2008
By Gail
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Really enjoyed this, and it also reminded me of M Cole's writing when she first started out. Money back guarantee in the back of this book if readers don't enjoy it, I'm going to write and ask to be notified of the release date of her next book! If you like the style of Martina's original books (before she went off the boil) then don't hesitate to read this.
