I love Dirty Dancing and had high hopes for finally acquiring an exercise DVD that I would actually enjoy, but I was really disappointed with it for a number of reasons.
Before I explain my disappointment, I think it's important to point out that ideally you need to have some basic experience in either Salsa or Meringue dancing to do this DVD, as some of the moves are a bit difficult for beginners.
The DVD starts off with some training sections to teach you the dance steps and get you warmed up etc. Being the Dirty Dancing video, I expected to be exercising to music from the movie all the way through. Unfortunately all but one of the training sections are choreographed to what can only be described as really BAD lift music (which was obviously a blatant attempt to save ££ on royalties). I was stunned that they didn't even bother to use cheap Salsa Music to at least keep to the theme of movie!
They sort of redeem themselves at the end when they bring all of the dance moves together and you jig along to a few songs from the movie, but the dancing is quite fast and complicated at this point and my friend who has never done salsa before couldn't keep up with it. For me, I have to say that the terrible lift music has put me right off ever doing the DVD again.
They only show you a few steps from the movie and some of the other dance moves (especially the ones choreographed by the male presenter) make you feel like a total idiot - even if you are completely alone in your own home with the curtains closed!
Also, the presenting skills of the instructors are just so cheesy it becomes dyer. They do an awful sketch right at the beginning of the DVD with a water melon which just made me swear at the telly.
With better production, music and presenters, this DVD could have been a fantastic, totally addictive chick flick workout. Unfortunately I am left feeling relieved that I only spent a few pounds buying a second hand copy off Amazon rather than paying full price for it!
My advice? Borrow a friends copy before purchasing to see if it annoys you!
