5.0 out of 5 stars The best Adam and the Ants album ! 19 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When the Ants were having their succesful period in about '81, I bought this album really just to complete my collection of their stuff and to tell the truth, I didn't like it much at the time. It was totally different to the music they were making at that time ( having been recorded 2 years earlier with a totally different line-up ), but after a while it really grew on me. It is a really good, clever album with some excellent songs on it which have stood the test of time. I love " Nine plan failed " and " Never trust a man ( with egg on his face )" the most. The songs are very sparse but very atmospheric. Dave Barbe ( the drummer) stands out on all the songs on this album. He was a very talented drummer who's talents were even more obvious with Bow Wow Wow, but who's rhythms shaped a lot of the songs on this album. It's a pity that this particular line-up only recorded one album together. An underrated classic ! Buy and be pleasantly surprised !

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic 28 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this on vinyl when it was first released and when Adam reformed the Ants in the early '80's and their popularity grew I found it hard to convince anyone it was worth buying. "No, it's punk" they cried. Well, time passes and people are eventually sitting up to listen. Don't be left out, buy it now on CD and believe!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars cowardice proved much too strong for vice 22 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
I had Dirk Wears White Sox on vinyl, and now have it on CD, Its certainly totally unlike any other Adam & The Ants album, and in fact not at all like any other album I can think of either. Strangely, although it was the Ants earliest album, it sounds kind of darker, more mature, thoughtful and measured than later albums. Although they are so completely different to this that comparisons are pointless.
The extra tracks from the singles are not be missed , good old early Ants punk roots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant! 27 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album when it first came out (I had a crush on Adam after seeing him in the film 'Jubilee') and became an avid fan until The Ants went a bit silly in the mid-80s. But to hear Catholic Day, Car Trouble, Day I Met God etc. all these years later, they still sound bloody brilliant! It took me back to being a teenager again!

BUY IT - you won't be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Ant 1 X Factor 0 27 April 2012
Format:Audio CD
I, like many, was into Adam and the Ants when they released their big hits like Antmusic and Stand and Deliver. All good, commercial stuff. Then I saw him live (twice !) this year and a lot of the songs he did were from this album and absolutely brilliant - raw, dark, edgy songs but catchy at the same time. So I bought this (aged 41 instead of 8 when it came out !) and love it. As other reviewers say, it's still so relevant and a total classic with no duff songs. Brilliant.

This remastered debut effort from Stuart Goddard and the first incarnation of his 'Ants' is a real breath of fresh air and the debt owed to it by many of today's guitar bands (Bloc Party for one) is evident throughout the album.
Early singles such as 'Cartrouble', 'Zerox' and 'Kick' hint at the commercial greatness to come, while the edgy 'Nine Plan Failed' and tongue in cheek 'Never Trust a Man (with Egg on his Face) are vibrant bursts of Rock; Adam's guitar heroes such as Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochrane clearly inspiring him.
If you listen to this and then immediately follow it with next album Kings Of The Wild Frontier it is easy to see how Adam's initial raw energy became blunted, however there is no filler here and original versions of Zerox, Cartrouble, Whip in my Valise and Kick! just serve to make this even more of an essential buy for all Ant fans as well as lovers of pure Punk Rock

4.0 out of 5 stars Sex Music For Ant People 20 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
In an era packed with dozens of incredibly original acts, Adam and the Ants were one of the most original. They had their own sound, their own look, their own presentation. I fell for it hook, line, and sinker but more than likely it was because I was going out with a Siouxsie clone at the time, who seemed to know all about underground artistic music.

Dirk Wears White Sox was their first, and came before the look that brought them so much notoriety fully came together. It also featured a very different version of the Ants, in the form of 3 guys who soon made their way to Bow Wow Wow. Sound wise the basic premise is similar, primeval chants and erratic drumming with a uncomfortable slightly darker almost slezzy edge that eats away at your subconscious. and is much less flashy although . Dirk slips somewhere between The Banshee's and Soft Cell; stark and dark with, angular and brittle injections. Not unlike Southern Death Cult a few years latter, So now you know where Franz Ferdinand stole there muse. Sex and religion and flirtatious encounters with voyeurism and S&M run riot through the lyrical imagery.

Dirk Wears White Sox was Adam and the Ants' first album, released on Do It Records in 1979, before Adam went on to fame with "Kings of the Wild Frontier" and became the darlings of the music press. Dirk Wears White Sox features a much more erratic, sometimes brooding sound than Ant's later work. The "Dirk" of the title refers to classic British film icon Dirk Bogarde. No title track was featured on the album, although a song entitled Dirk Wears White Socks (sic) had been played extensively at the band's live concerts.

Adam even invented the concept of the existence of a whole ant mythology and history.
