I ordered this book as a present for my mother who has worked in the fashion industry for many years. She started making clothes for many Royal Patrons and over they years has worked for Jaeger and Country Casuals. Although the photo's are very impressive. The text of the entire book is in French!! At no point, anywhere, in the description is this mentioned!!! I presume this book has been published for the UK market and it would be nice if this was made more apparent. Luckily for me, my mum is more than happy to look at the photos.

The book is titled "Dior Couture photographed by Patrick Demarchelier". It is a big sized (29.2 x 36.1cm) book with over 100 photographs of Dior Haute Couture pieces, ca 1/3 in black and white. There is almost no text, only 1/2 page foreword by Jeff Koons and 5 pages Introduction by Ingrid Sischy, all definitively in English. I expected a beautiful picture book, not a history or complete overview of Dior Couture, and I got what I expected and enjoyed the book - the photographs are really stunning. I would have liked an index of the models, but that is my only critic.

Usually you buy these art and fashion books to impress your friends or have a flick through when you have time to kill but this one is so captivating I can spend 10 minutes looking at one dress. The sheer astonishing effort that goes into the couture is reflected here by the size and quality of the book itself, which I would dare say is worth far more than the asking price.

I do agree that the focus is more on Galliano and there is a lack of Christian Dior's work however this has been explored in other books. There is also an absence of Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Giafranco Ferre et al but i imagine this is testimony to (dare I say) Galliano's genius. His work is incredible and sadly this has become his entire Dior opus after his fall from grace last year nevertheless I love him and the book is a magnificent display of his capabilities as a dress maker.

As for the photography, demarchelier is on form. Enough said. The only single reservation I have is Carine Roitfeld's dreadful styling around the centre of the book. She has managed to make Dior couture look like a TopShop advert, comment if you agree, obviously you'll have to buy the book to see it, which is my intention because you definitely should
