Product Description

Product Description

In 1947 Christian Dior rocked the fashion world with his "New Look" which dominated post war fashion and firmly secured the name of his house in the minds of the public and the fashion industry. He drew on historical models of femininity and utilized the unique skills of Parisian haute couture in textiles, embroidery, cutting and sewing techniques to produce stunning designs that captured the new mood of optimism after the war. Dior also designed and marketed ready-made luxe lines and broke new ground by creating and controlling innovative licensing agreements for all Dior products, from perfume to stockings, jewellery, bathing suits and even men's ties. Based on new research, this absorbing and beautifully illustrated book examines the seminal years of Christian Dior, 1947-1957, from a truly international perspective.

This is a lovely book which gives a valuable insight into a master craftsman. Dior excelled at producing beautifully crafted clothes. The New Look launched in 1947 was a welcome tonic after the austerity of the second world war when clothes were of neccesity kept to the minimum. A marvellous read. Highly recommended.

"Dior" by Alexandra Palmer 12 Jan 2010
By Bradford Samuel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have anxiously waited for Alexandra Palmer's book on Dior to be released, this after having many gnawing questions answered by another one of her books "Couture and Commerce". I was not disappointed. This book is not another pretty coffee table book on Dior (although there are are many great photos and illustrations), but rather a cohesive overview of the history, and inner-workings of the couture house itself. Another beautifully written, and exhaustively researched book from Ms. Palmer.

This book was an excellent history lesson on the most successful man in Couture. I had some idea of his successes but not like this. I really appreciated all the information and the great pictures. Really enjoyed this book.
Interesting history of dior and the early evolution of fashion 15 Mar 2012

The books gives a great overview of who dior was, what happened to change the fashion industry and who else influenced it. Great images and sources. This is the second book I have from the Victoria and Albert museum fashion book titles they offer and I am very impressed.
