Book Description

27 Aug 2012 0521282373 978-0521671064 2
Updated with the material that instructors want, Dinosaurs continues to make science exciting and understandable to non-science majors through its narrative of scientific concepts rather than endless facts. It now contains new material on pterosaurs, an expanded section on the evolution of the dinosaurs and new photographs to help students engage with geology, natural history and evolution. The authors ground the text in the language of modern evolutionary biology, phylogenetic systematics, and teach students to examine the paleontology of dinosaurs exactly as the professionals in the field do using these methods to reconstruct dinosaur relationships. Beautifully illustrated, lively and engaging, this edition continues to encourage students to ask questions and assess data critically, enabling them to think like a scientist.

Product Description

Review

'… the most comprehensive and useful text on dinosaurs on the market. It's both authoritative and whimsical, providing the student with a great background on dinosaurs and on the sciences needed to understand them. It's fun to read and [has] great illustrations too.' Kevin Padian, Museum of Paleontology, University of California, Berkeley

Review of the first edition: 'I am excited to see that the authors have selected not to overwhelm the student with detail.' Mark Oiumette, Hardin-Simmons University

Review of the first edition: 'Does an excellent job of explaining cladistics.' Bill Zinsmeister, Purdue University

Review of the first edition: 'Well written … the authors' sense of humor makes it enjoyable to read; it summarizes most of the important topics in dinosaur paleontology using current information.' Carol Waddell-Sheets, Canisius College

Review of the first edition: 'This is an outstanding contribution for anyone teaching a course involving dinosaurs … it is reasonably short and very much up to date.' Sherwood Wise, Florida State University

Review of the first edition: 'It's a nice length - subjects are discussed with the appropriate amount of depth and level of coverage. The writing style and tone is engaging and I like the incorporation of phylogeny.' David Varricchio, Montana State University

Review of the first edition: 'Very up-to-date information … superior illustration.' John Taylor, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

'It's the best fit for my course of any book out there because it's focused less on the dinosaurs themselves and more on how dinosaurs illustrate important lessons in the history of life … I'm definitely going to adopt it for my course.' J. Bret Bennington, Hofstra University

'Dinosaurs remain a 'hot' topic … To explore their past world, one needs to have a very good guide. With the publication of the book by Fastovsky and Weishampel, the latter is now available … demonstrates an outstanding degree of comprehensity … an outstanding synthesis of the modern knowledge on dinosaurs.' Dmitry Ruban, The German Geological/Palaeontological Journal

'It is an admirable work, something unlike I have seen in other texts in the field. The 240 page lexicon is elegant and freshly instructive. I find this text compact, self-contained and interesting to read.' Gibson Batch, Rheology Bulletin

'Overall I find Dinosaurs: A Concise Natural History to be a welcome improvement over what in my opinion was already the best dinosaur textbook on the market.' William Parker, Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology

'… Fastovsky and Weishampel have been at the forefront of this genre … One rather interesting section … deals with slightly more philosophical questions relating to the history of ideas as well as the major contributors to the study of dinosaurs … It is … concise as well as being accessible and highly informative on the topic of dinosaurs and the science that can be applied to understanding them. As a well-structured, thoughtful and helpful undergraduate teaching guide it is absolutely excellent.' David Norman, The Geographical Journal

'… all the questions that everyone asks about … are treated in most up-to-date detail … this is an excellent book.' Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society

'I admire the authors for stripping each clade down to the essential information, while preserving the geeky details that make dinosaurs so fascinating. Equally up-to-date treatments of mass extinction, metabolism, growth, and other relevant topics round out the discussion. Both college instructors and students will find this textbook a fun and accessible introduction to the world of dinosaurs.' Andrew A. Farke and Raymond M. Alf, The Quarterly Review of Biology

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on dinosaurs money can buy! 29 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I am only half way through this book and I have been tremendously impressed - here's why:

1. Very easy to read - well done to the authors - clear, concise text resulting in a detailed summary.
2. At last.......!!!!! Excellent diagrams - the exploded Plateosaurus with skull components - how long have I waited for this?! Tired of reading text and wondering what the actual skeletal element actually looks like.....
3. Very well updated - wow, has this field moved on.....
4. Affordable - good price for the quality of information.

Folks, if you're a dinosaur enthusiast, this book is a must. Take my advice, buy this book and enjoy. An excellent job from Weishampel and Fastovsky.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on dinosaurs for beginners 17 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've never studied palaeontology before, but with this book my first palaeontology class became more of a pleasure than a must. It explains things directly and precisely without being too niched and the images are clear and always have something to give.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Dinosaurs: A Concise Natural History 29 Oct 2013
By Beryl A. Ingram - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fine book. I like the interplay of diagrams, photographs, graphs, blue-backgrounded text boxes with special information, and the regular text. Those broken up pages allow the reader to move from section to section at will rather than reading what would otherwise be overwhelmingly dense material; the information is highly technical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer 21 Oct 2013
By John P - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wish some version of this book had existed, and been available to me, twenty or even ten years ago. Dinosaurs: A Concise Natural History is a college-level (or perhaps late high-school) textbook on every known aspect of the dinosauria. Subjects include the use of cladograms; evolution of the dinosauria; skeletal structures and nomenclature; feathers; geology; dietary preferences; and many others too varied to mention. The book includes a useful glossary, and end-of-chapter questions for those wishing to "test" themselves on what they have learned. I'd recommend this book to any budding paleontologist ready to move to the next level, or an amateur looking to put a finer polish to their knowledge base.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will be using it as a reference manual for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur book review 28 July 2013
By Wayne Kalama - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I find the book informative and enlightening. It will be added to my collection of reference materials as I try to get a better understanding of that subject. It's humorous but informative and approaches the topic in an academic way which is what I've been looking for. Even though they're not in color the John Sibbick's illustrations are a big plus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Useful 5 Jan 2013
By customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Pros:

This doesn't get sidetrack too often, the book stays on its way to teach all you need to learn
Paragraphs are clear, understandable, and keeps you interested enough that you can still continue.

Cons:

All not in colors, this is okay to me, but if you have the option to choose, and you would like more colorful pictures, this is not the one.

One of the best books on this subject that I have read. I chose this book because of the title, I have read a lot of books about dinosaurs and this one is written for my understanding.
