Product Description

John Thaw gives a compelling performance as a small-time boxing promoter struggling to maintain his integrity in a crooked world in this BBC drama from the creator of Minder.
Supported by a first-rate cast including Liam Neeson in an early role and Maureen Lipman. John Thaw gives one of his finest-ever performances as the flawed but ultimately courageous boxing manager.

3.0 out of 5 stars A FINE BBC DRAMA 13 May 2009
Format:DVD
This is an excellent single play from the BBC's legendary 'Play For Today' strand which ran from 1970 to 1984. This 1978 entry from the series boasts a fine leading performance from John Thaw, just as he was finishing with 'The Sweeney', and was written by Leon Griffiths who shortly afterwards created 'Minder'. Thaw plays a boxing manager whose young charge is put up to fight on a bill in front of the local toffs and businessmen. Liam Neeson makes a fleeting appearance very early in his career and the play was produced by Dennis Potter's regular producer, Kenith Trodd. I would thoroughly recommend the play itself but with a running time of just over an hour, and no extras or special features included, this DVD needs to be very competitively priced to justify real value for money.

ithought the the play was very good john thaw almost sounding like jack reagan from the sweeney was exellent and very convinsing as dinny mathhews a boxing promoter.
as a one off drama play his caracter is diffrent to reagan and his acting perticualy near the end of the play i feel is exellent .
its well worth perchasing a great peice of 1970s television .
it was first shown on the bbc in november 1978 at the time the sweeney was coming to the end of being shown .
i iconic peice of good 1970s television for fans of the late great john thaw enjoy .
