Product Description

Synopsis

Presents the history of the 279 Squadron. 279 was the first squadron to employ the airborne lifeboat, which was carried beneath the bellies of the portly Hudson. In January 1942, a practical boat, fitted with oars, sails and engines was put into production. Containing first-hand accounts, this book covers the development and the operations.

This is an extremely well written insight into wartime air sea rescue. I'm looking forward to the author's next book in this World War 2 series.

3.0 out of 5 stars ASR WW2, 20 Feb 2009
By CherryBee "CherryB" (West Sussex UK) - See all my reviews
This is an account of operations of 279 ASR squadron Coastal Command during WW2. Once it was appreciated by the RAF that specially equipped and trained crews were needed to rescue crews who ditched in the sea, specialist squadrons were designated, of which 279 was one. Innovative equipment, like the specially designed (by Uffa Fox)lifeboat to be dropped from aircraft like the Vickers Warwick is documented. Unfortunately for any reader, the action is rather slow and the successes (sadly) relatively rare. Many sorties were flown in search of crews which resulted in 'nothing sighted'. This is not in any way intended to diminish from the unstinting efforts and risks run by the men who flew these operations.
The rescue crews themselves suffered casualties, and were sometimes attacked by hostile aircraft. You need to have a special interest in the subject to derive maximum benefit from this book - but it would be a pity if universal appeal were the only criteria for writing a book. We need authors to write about these rather more specialised subjects.
