5.0 out of 5 stars Dimsie deals with the beauty rebels, 10 Oct 2008
This review is from: Dimsie Intervenes (Hardcover)
As Head Girl of Jane Willard's Dimsie Maitland has to deal with all sorts of strange problems. The one in this book is not really serious but it demonstrates once again how well the accomplished author can portray the many situations that develop between the pupils at various stages in their school careers. It also demonstrates once again how Dorita Fairlie Bruce's creation of a shrewd and sympathetic headmistress like Miss Yorke is so appealing.

Only once does Dimsie give way to anger and this is when she meets an older lady who refuses to help her with the use of a piano because she (the old lady that is) does not believe in encouraging any organisations that seem to have a slightly military flavour. An insult to the Union Flag with its red, white and blue is something that our heroine can not endure and Dimsie speaks her mind in a wholly convincing manner.

Most of Dimsie's problems can be traced to the misplaced zeal of Hilary Garth who wants to raise money for what she considers is a good cause. Never directly breaking a rule has always been Hilary's policy but this does not prevent her from finding mischief and excitement in coming up with ideas that have not been expressly forbidden. Hilary's aunt (Rosamund -Dimsie's best friend) despairs but Dimsie always finds a way of doing the right thing.

It is not the best of the Dimsie books but still well worth reading.
