Oil Free heaters are a new development in Portable heating. Some are styled like traditional oil filled column heaters whilst others are more modern in design. Like their oil filled counterparts outputs vary from 700w to 3kW. The main benefit with oil free radiators is that they warm up very fast, are lighter in weight (yet durable) and responsive to providing heat when you need it in comparison to oil filled products. In terms of energy saving features, look out for thermostats, heat settings and timers. More advanced features include electronic climate control, remote controls, and twin panel elements to increase control over the appliance.

A powerhouse in a small casing,
This review is from: Dimplex OFRC20TIC Electric Oil Free Column Heater with Timer, 2 Kilowatt (Kitchen & Home)
I bought 2 Dimplex OFRC20c (NB: the model WITHOUT timer) and 2 of the 1.5kW model Dimplex OFRC15c from Amazon in November 2010 in anticipation of another cold winter in the UK. And thank God I did. These heaters have worked so well through the December cold gust that both I and my wife quite literally feel that we have a new house. Gone are the days when we walked around fully dressed to keep warm during the cold months. The smaller heaters have been warming our two smaller bedrooms (12-14 square metres, normal ceiling height) whereas one of the larger heaters has been in our living room (20 square metres, 3.5 metre ceiling) and the other one has been warming the large bedroom (18 square metres, normal ceiling). We have no additonal insulation in the house and the sash windows (some deity's curse on mankind...) are drafty. During the period we've had the heaters, we've never had to operate any of them on the full power setting. We consistently use power setting I (of II) and the thermostats are typically set halfway between min and max. Each room has been comfortable enough for me to walk around in shorts and T-shirt despite sub zero temperatures outside. With respect to power consumption I have not noticed any adverse change compared to previous years. That said, our previous heating arrangement for said rooms was an inverter airconditioning system so I'm probably comparing with the worst heating system ever from an energy standpoint. Long story short, I am very happy with my purchase and would thoroughly recommend both the 20c and the 15c to anyone with a need for portable heating. With hindsight I could probably have bought only the 15c model for all four rooms. The 20c is a real powerhouse and unless it gets seriously cold, I doubt I will ever see myself coming close to using it's full capacity. It's nice to know that there is plenty of juice left, though...

fabulous radiator, has kept my bedroom very warm during this cold snap. If i was to gripe, i would say the cord was a bit short.
