Product Description

Dimplex Forté 10 L Dehumidifier
Dimplex Forté 10 L Dehumidifier

The Dimplex Forté 10 L dehumidifier is ideal for reducing the levels of humidity in rooms up to 15 m sq. It works by drawing moist air in through the back of the unit and passing it over a refrigerated coil that condenses the moisture in the air, turning it into water, which is then collected in a removable tank. Once the moisture has been separated, the air passes over another coil where it is warmed back up to an ambient room temperature, before being circulated back into the room. This Forté dehumidifier can extract up to 10 litres a day allowing you to set the air moisture to a comfortable level. It will also help drying out walls when decorating and will help you dry clothes indoors quicker.

This is the 5th dehumidifier I've had over the last 30 or so years, so I've got experience of them. Firstly, this is a proper dehumidifier not one of the modern low power Peltier Effect machines (which in my experience aren't worth bothering with - I threw the last one out as ineffective).
Firstly a lesson in how they work - they have a fridge mechanism in them and a fan. Air is blown through the device, the moisture condenses on the cooler and runs into the container at the bottom and the air is then warmed slightly as it leaves the machine. When the container is full, it stops and puts on a warning light. The amount it will remove from the air depends on many things - including both the temperature and humidity. For instance, on a frosty morning the air is bone dry and the unit can't remove anything.
The unit is not quiet - it just can't be with a compressor and fan running. You wouldn't want it in your bedroom when trying to sleep and probably not in the hall immediately outside the door. However, it isn't any more noisy than any other unit I've used of this size.
It works well - outside my bathroom door in the upstairs hall on a timer, running for a couple of hours each morning after we have had our showers. I've just emptied a full container of water after a few days use, as the weather has been wet for several days now.
It is well designed and quite stylish (well, about as stylish as it could be).
All in all, a good product and I'd recommend it.

I live in a modern timber frame house, and have done since its construction was completed nearly five years a go.

There are many advantages to having this type of property, but it's fair to say there are a few downsides.

One of the particularly good things is that the house manages to be extremely warm in the winter (maintaing heat very efficently), yet can be cool and equally comfortable in the summer.

There has been one consistent negative feature that predominantly occurs throughout each winter however, MOULD!

I have always used the garden to dry my washing for as much of the year as possible, but unfortunately this leaves several months when alteratives must be sought. I have a tumble drier, but am extremely reluctant to use it because of it's ridiculous running costs; so have almost exclusively relied on indoor airers in my spare bedroom.

Almost from the start I noticed the downside to this method of drying, particularly in a modern energy efficient home; there is no where for moisture from the drying clothes to escape to, particularly considering I used the aforementioned spare bedroom which had the highly insulated loft above it.

Large patches of back mould began to form on the ceiling (particularly in the corners) and down the walls (again particularly in the corners); I tried to combat this by opening the windows, but this was simply not practical because of how often the house was left unattended, and also because of the waste of money considering the heating was often on.

It got so bad that it was the first thing one would notice on entering the room, and the patches got larger and darker.

Had a problem with some penetrating damp in my dining room. Once I had located the issue and repaired, I was left with a wall that need to be dried out. This gizmo does the trick, and then some. The clothes I had put on an airer in the room next door were bone dry in the morning as well.
It's not 'whisper quiet' but then can you really expect that from a unit with a fan? It's quiet enough to not be too obtrusive- and I am delighted with the results.

This is, in my opinion, one of the better looking of the condenser humidifiers on offer on amazon. It's plasticy, but sleek and quite muted in appearance. It also comes on wheels, so it's easy to move about. The water tank is an odd shape but serves its function. Only 2.3l, but on the first 3 days I ran it in my room it filled up quickly. After that it took a few days to fill.

It's actually quite quiet, I can sleep with it on no trouble because it is a consistent white noise, kind of a dim humming. I wouldn't describe it as whisper quiet though.

It has 4 stars and not 5 stars for 2 reasons:

    1. It doesn't work as quickly as I expected (as other reviewers has noticed) but more than fast enough for domesitc applications. Don't buy it if you have a chronic damp problem which needs urgent drying.
    2. When removing the tank, sometimes the water keeps dripping from the outlet of the condenser, which is a bit annoying. It's not a real problem, I just have cloth ready.

All in all I would recommend this on the grounds that it does what it purports to do, and does it well. It also looks a hundred times better than some of the hideous looking humidifiers on offer.

Despite claiming to remove up to 10 Litres of moisture per day i found that after 3 days of use on its highest setting in an 24 square metre room with a humidity of 60% it had only removed 500ml of water.
The unit seemed to be in 'defrost mode' virtually all the time, even though the room was 25 degrees and had plenty of moisture in the air.
I sent it back and got a full refund from amazon.
I bought an ebac 2650 in the end and this has worked fine for 2 months, and even came with 5 years free warranty
