I agree with a couple of the other reviewers in that this book was unnecessarily long. I very much enjoyed the final couple of chapters, but frequently grew tired of the story and the main character, Amelia Garayoa, for whom I couldn't muster any admiration or sympathy. The way I read this, all the horrible things that happened to Amelia (and just about everyone close to her) were the result of an initial, bad decision on her part. That decision was followed by her plodding along through various situations life threw at her, using as an excuse that she was "in too deep" to avoid facing the consequences of her decisions. Amelia is frequently described as a strong, intelligent woman... but I was soon annoyed with her making one seriously crappy choice after another.
On a more personal note, when I read I pay very close attention to the language used, how the story is written, the words and phrases used... I truly believe that language is just as much part of the story as the characters, and I didn't feel like the author was mindful in this respect. In addition to repeating very distinctive phrasing a few times in the story (different, completely unrelated characters), my edition had several editing mistakes (typos, etc.)
