Product Description

The introduction of the digital camera brought about one of the biggest changes in the photography industry. Film slowly began to fade away, and with it, many of its antiquated styles and procedures. Digital photography was further revolutionized in 1991 with the release of the first digital SLR. Coincidentally, one year prior, in 1990, Adobe released the groundbreaking photo editing software Photoshop. Fast forward to present day and it is obvious that the digital SLR market has exploded, with manufacturers fine-tuning their technology and making them affordable to everyone. How to Digitally Photograph Cars is a how-to book on digitally photographing a vehicle the professional way, with techniques and secrets from professional photographers. It features in-depth, post-processing procedures and teaches you how to achieve professional quality photographs. This book includes tips on panning, car to car motion, shooting engine bays, using an automotive rig, controlling lighting, and more. The book even has strategies for selling your finished work to automotive publications. It also offers extensive information on using Photoshop for post processing your automotive images, including Photoshop's essential tools, contrast and color adjustments, working with RAW files, layers and multi-layering, dropping backgrounds, clipping photos together, filters, resizing, and more. With 128 pages & 292 colour photos.

Disappointing 18 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
It's a good looking book with some nice pictures but as far as information about car photography goes its rather lacking.

It's the same as any other photography book, telling you about what kit to buy, exposure, lighting, etc etc but the amount of info specific to car photography is not very much and not very good.

As far as insider tips and tricks goes they basically give you a few pages on rig shots which is doesn't give you nearly as much info as something like rigshots au com.

I have had this one on order for a long time and it finally arrived today. As I mention in the title it has received a lot of hype on various forums already so I had very high hopes for this one as a professional car photographer ... but was rather disappointed to be honest.

There are some very nice shots in this book, and the explanations are well done ... but they remain basic. For instance they talk a lot about using strobes, but nowhere do they mention at what power the strobes were used, the shutter speed and f-value are only part of the equation here, the power output of the strobes is equally, if not more important.

They go into rig photography, and car to car shooting ... but never really into the small print, it stays rather basic, you could find the same if not better info on the internet unfortunately.

It is a nice book for those that are just starting out in car photography, or those who have a general interest and would like to know some basic stuff about how to photograph cars ... but don't expect to become an expert from this book alone. Once you gather some experience of your own you will outgrow this one pretty fast.

As a plus it is just about the first book to deal with photographing cars with digital equipment, I also have the 'How to photograph cars' by James Mann and to be honest this latter one is better, only downside of it is the fact that it doesn't deal with the digital era yet, perhaps a second edition would be great idea ...

Bottom line : it's a nice book, and I don't regret buying it, but I was expecting to learn more from it.

Very informative 25 May 2009
By Casey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a beginner to the DSLR world of photography, I wanted to find a guide out there that would point me in the right direction towards becoming a better photographer with my recently-acquired Nikon DSLR. I'd been taking pictures of the cars I've owned with point-and-shoots for almost a decade now so I had a good idea of how to go about composing a shot, but I had no clue how shutter speed, aperature, and ISO sensitivities all came together to get those great shots you'd see in magazines or online publications. I feel that this book is a great guide on how to get started in the automotive branch of photography; after reading this book I could walk away feeling much more confident that I at least had an idea of how to go about setting up the different modes on my camera. I also loved the fact that there was an even mix of shots from both authors, and it was very interesting to see the comparisons between Siu's and Mackey's photos, especially since Mackey's were post-processed and Siu's were not (for the most part). Speaking of post-processing, they have an entire chapter devoted to just that. I at first figured I could skip this since I had a good understanding of how Photoshop works, but after reading that chapter I picked up plenty of helpful tips that will make using that program even easier in the future. If I had to say something negative about the book, it would probably be that it's a little on the short side--I would loved to have been able to read even more. However, it was an informative book and I learned a lot from it.

A lot of hype ... but it remains basic unfortunately 19 Jun 2009

This really is a book for those that are just starting out in this interesting field of photography.
At no stage does it go really into details, for instance they talk a lot about using flashes and strobes ... but nowhere do they mention the power setting of the strobe, probably the most important thing. The exif data is nice, but if extra lights are used you really need to know the power.

They really go into detail (with lots of samples) when it comes to interiors and engine bays ... but when they turn to indoor and outdoor events (probably the place where most people reading this will be able to shoot cars) they only spend a few paragraphs and next to no pictures ... a missed opportunity I think.

Apparently they are big on rig shots, which are nice, but there is so much more to getting these done perfectly, also keep in mind that suction cups leave marks, make sure the owner of the car knows about this, an exotic car owner will not take it kindly having his car returned with several round marks on his 10K paintjob.

I'm a professional automotive photographer, and because a lot of hype was created around this book on various forums around I pre-ordered it a long time ago, when it finally arrived I actually red it from cover to cover in a few days ... and felt it didn't add anything I didn't know already.

It is a great book when you have no or very little experience photographing cars, but don't expect to become a specialist from this book alone ... it's a basis that will allow you to get started, but that's about it.
