Whilst still bearing the band name M83, Digital Shades Vol.1 is essentially Anthony Gonzalez's first solo project. The album is predominantly instrumental, and in many ways represents a logical progression from 'Before the Dawn Heals us All', especially in terms of the longer ambient tracks from that album such as 'Lower your Eyelids to Die with the Sun', which are similar in scope to that found on Digital Shades. Fans of the subsequent 80's dream-pop sound of 'Saturdays=Youth' and 'Hurry up, We're Dreaming' should still find much to enjoy, and the synth work is as good as on any other; just don't expect the pace or variety of other M83 albums: this is textural and ambient throughout! The only real downside to Digital Shades, is that given the slow-burning nature of the tracks, the album would have benefited from being slightly longer. Hopefully this is indeed the first in a series of 'digital' offerings from Gonzalez; and it seems entirely appropriate that, unlike other M83 albums, Digital Shades has been left out of the recent vinyl re-releases!
