My wife bought me this book in june 2008, after i had just started my new hobby of digital photography. I had just purchased a Canon 400D and accesseries. I had read the book and just for me, i was diappointed. I hoped that this book would teach me all about cameras, lens, software, how to take pictures etc; But only 30% of this book covers these most important subjects. Especially as im a complete novice! The rest of the book concentrates on software/editing/emailing pics etc; I wanted to know the basics. I did enjoy the book thou but it was lacking the above elements for me.. Thankfully i've bought another book which is fab and great for the novice photographer.

If you are looking for a book to guide you through the steps of taking great photographs and de-mystifying the more obscure settings on your camera, this is not the book.
It does have tips and pointers, and some nice shots to explain the text, but the strength of the book lies in the later chaptes on image editing.
The particular focus is on using photoshop elements, and it gives you everything you need to know to enhance and/or alter your digital images. If this is what you are after, add this to your library.
Once you've mastered 'elements' you may even want to splash out and buy elements big brother, photoshop.

The Digital Photography step by step, book arrived in pristine condition. For someone like me lacking in computer skills, I trust the purchase will go on assisting me when I use my camera, and later when using photoshop.
The layout of the book lends itself to everyone except those in the photographic trade or perhaps computer graphic designers( for this level of skills, Jerry Glenwright's book is too basic-I feel). But for me it exactly fits the bill, for my level of skill.
Yours faithfully
Liam Geary-
