The Digital Photography Companion Gift Pack is aimed at owners of new digital cameras who want to do more with their photos than just copy them to their hard drive and forget about them. The core of the pack is the Pixology Piccolo 2 image management application which allows you to upload images from your camera, carry out basic image editing and file conversion and provides photo album and slide show production tools. There's also access to Pixology's Flash Prints service--an online digital print processing bureau that will put your images on anything from high quality posters to T-shirts, mouse mats and even coffee mugs.
Evaluation versions of Illuminatus Opus Pro, Illuminatus Opus and JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 are provided on a second CD-ROM. Illuminatus Opus is a multimedia authoring application--if you want to see what it's capable of, the third CD-ROM contains an interactive guide to digital photography and digital image editing produced using Illuminatus. Paint Shop Pro is an advanced, yet easy to learn digital image editing application. All three evaluations run for 60 days. Finally there's a sample pack of Ilford's Printasia inkjet printer paper, though six sheets could hardly be described as generous.
The best aspects of the package are undoubtedly the guide and the Flash Prints service. One of the most often made criticisms of digital cameras is the difficulty of producing prints for friends and family, and Flash Prints overcomes this supremely well with an easy-to-use service that provides plenty of opportunities for photo-based gifts.
If you're happy to use your inkjet printer for hard copies, but are keen to experiment with digital image editing, you might also consider Adobe PhotoDeluxe 4.0 Home Edition, Microsoft Picture It! Photo and Print CD 2002, or Ulead Photo Express 4.0.--Ken McMahon
