Surprised this thing works so well for the price as when I looked into getting one a few years ago they were far too expensive for my purpose. At this stage I have only tested it out but it seems fine and should be OK for what I want, which is more boroscope than microscope.
I have found:
Works on a Mac without the need for software or driver installation. I just connected it to a USB port and the device "Microscope" appears in the Camera menu of both Photobooth & Facetime.
Documentation is not hugely helpful. There is nothing on focusing or use of the tripod. It may be its wrong doc as package labels product as TE001 and doc is for product B005.
Focus was so far off, at first I thought it was broke. Pointed it at some text and adjusted focus (the end of the barrel twists) and eventually everything came clear. Its probably set for close microscopic focus.

I will probably spend the rest of the weekend pointing it in the darkest recesses of my car's engine as I am hunting down a vacuum leak.

I may install the supplied Supereyes software on an old PC to see if it offers anything extra. A quick browse suggests its only additional benefit over say video capture like Photobooth is the ability to calibrate and subsequently measure lengths when the device is used as a microscope.

Well worth the cost and it's a great little microscope, delivered before stated, I can't fault it, having lots of fun every time I use it, feels fairly sturdy and easy to use.

Length: 0:15 Mins
Notes after ten minutes of use.
I am on OpenSuse Linux.
With the UVC software installed I just connected the camera and loaded GUVCViewer and it worked straight away.
From the Technical specs,
Image sensor; 0.3 mega pixels, Resolution; 640 x 480 (max), Focus range; 10 > 500 mm.
In practice its a pretty good web cam, so you could easily use it to record demo's for You tube.
As it can be focussed to infinity, (50 metres or more), it could even be used as a security camera.
I posted my first attempts at close up stills (not held down by glass) of a bug found on my window sill.
To work as a microscope the end cup has to be removed to get close enough.
The attached video was through a plate of photo frame glass with the end in contact with the glass.
In this mode (?) the led's reflections are at the periphery. However, under glass, at focal lengths in the tens of millimetres, their reflections interfere with the object, ie with the end cap on.
Very happy. I can abandon trying to get my power hungry defective Fuji film camera ( do not buy one) working as a web / demo cam.

I wasn't expecting this to be as good or as versatile as it is. As advertised it can zoom in closely to magnify significantly an object and also by twisting the shaft to focus the lens it can also work as a decent web cam. The plastic hood gives extra stability for macro work but can be removed if you need to get into a small space. There is a in line control for varying the LED intensity or switching the LEDs off completely. A lot has been said about the quality of the supplied software but this works out of the box on macs and linux computers with standard system software. The supplied software worked fine in Windows too, changing the menus from the default Chinese was fairly obvious. The little plastic tripod supplied is a bonus and all together this a great value package at the current price (£17).

I wonder what 5MP means? "XCSOURCE® 200X 5MP USB LED Digital 200X Microscope Endoscope Borescope TE01"
Cut this from the description "Output Image from 'Normal' to 'Large'. If you choose 'Large', you can get the resolution 640 x 480!"
640 x 480 = 307KP or 307,200 pixels???

If you're worried about buying this because of the price, don't, I got it to replace the Koolertron 50X-500X 8-LED USB Microscope which arrived broken. This one was half the price, built twice as strong, and it actually works. The Koolertron was maybe 30pence worth of gear and £33 profit for the Chinese. This one is about 40 pence worth of gear with £16 profit for the Chinese. So they're still taking us for a ride, but at least I got SOMETHING for my money other than hassle.

The bundled software is, once again, terrible. Not as bad as the Koolertron which was a masterclass in how to do everything wrong, but it's pretty damn bad. This is not a product for the computer novice simply because of how bad the software is. The product is very easy to use once you get the hang of the software though.

I would say it's just barely worth the money. The Chinese really need to up their game because I'm doing my best to educate consumers about all the secret places where they cut corners. Power Supplies is a big one, most Chinese power suppliers would not pass any safety testing on earth but they print the CE logo and what have you on there, because they can, and they -just don't care- if you die in a house fire.

I should add, I've had this unit plugged in 10 minutes and it's already very warm. Perhaps because the aluminum case is just a very efficient conductor of heat. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
