5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lens 19 Dec 2008
Verified Purchase
Like a lot of keen amateurs using a DSLR with standard 18-55 mm (kit) lens I began to look at other (in this case wide angle) lenses and was immediately confronted with the high cost of wide angle zooms. Again like many people I was a little taken aback at the cost of the Sigma 10-20 zoom at over £300 even on Amazon.

After a lot of research on the web I came across the Digital King wide angle lens - .7X which is made in Japan and is designed specifically to work with a 18-55 kit lens. It just screws on the front like a filter; your kit lens does all the focussing bit.

Took the plunge and bought it through Amazon UK although it was supplied by RK Photographic. It arrived 2 days later inside a nifty pouch with draw string and protected by front and back good quality lens caps. Total cost less tha £70.00 p&p free. Free 5 year guarantee.

I have to say when I took it out of the box it looked beautiful. Obviously larger in depth and diameter than a filter but still light to use. On maximum wide angle of the kit lens (18mm) it becomes a 12.6 approx wide
angle lens. The quality of image using my Nikon D40 is simply superb and I'm sure would easily meet the standards of keen amateurs. It gives a pleasing natural wide angle "distortion" when used closely to objects although less than a fish-eye would but it is still quite dramatic.

It was interesting because when I looked more closely at reviews of this lens in other web forums I was struck by how the most vehemently against this type of lens clearly had not even used one let alone owned one. This is what convinced me to buy the Digital King lens. No-one who owned one had criticized it. It seemed to be a result of a certain sort of snobbery: you will only get quality by paying through the nose for it.

After using two slr's (a Canon film slr and an Olympus dslr) that employed dedicated multi-element wide-angle and telephoto convertors and been pleased with results, I thought this convertor worth trying. Happily my initial experience confirms its maker's claims. This attachment has a single glass element especially designed to match a 18-55mm dslr standard zoom lens at its widest setting e.g. 18mm. My convertor is 52mm dia. for a Pentax K100d but a 58mm dia. version is also available.

Overall the performance on my camera is excellent. Perhaps not just due to careful design and manufacture but also as experience suggests, the less glass added to the front of an already good camera lens the better. Being lightweight and compact the convertor slips conveniently into the front pocket of a zoomster camera bag; accessories are no use unless to hand. Other plus points are nothing to go wrong, all camera functions are retained and the chance of dust entering the camera is eliminated by using a supplementary lens.

Reasonable care is needed screwing it into the host lens filter ring but once its screw thread is properly engaged my converter spins on and off freely helped by its milled edge, black crackle finish, providing a secure finger grip. The lens appears to be multi-coated and its barrel is marked MC. This metal barrel although shallow seems to offer a little shading. Toda-Seiko Ltd (Japan) have been making conversion lenses for around 20 years for different optical equipment and camera makers something that I find reassuring - see their website.

Not everyone can justify or afford an expensive prime or zoom wide-angle lens but they can enjoy the added fun and interest of making more dynamic photos. with this convertor.

Super light and handy to carry around at an excellent price. No distortion: in fact I tend to leave in on all the time now when out and and about.

I am using this on my Panasonic FZ200. It fit directly on the lens. It increases the angle nicely and the results are nice clear photos. Very happy with this. Good service and communication from this vendor while shipping to the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be sure it's enough for you. 27 Oct 2010
I've given 5 stars because it does "what it says on the tin" and does it well! Images remain clear and sharp with an increase in barrel distortion that you should expect to get with a wider angle (it's perfectly acceptable to me). The only question you need to ask is whether it's wide enough for you. If you're after a really dramatic effect then this isn't the converter for you. I had to take pics with it on and then off to compare results and it does do the trick - I actually leave it on my camera now to get that extra bit, but I wouldn't say it has the wow factor - not when it's only a 0.7x converter. On my DX Nikon, this converter almost removes the 1.5x crop factor (18 x 1.5 * 0.7 = 18.9). I'm sure that a 0.6 or 0.5 converter would be much more dramatic, but if that's not what you want, then get this one. I haven't tried any landscape pics yet, but I'm sure the distortion will be hardly noticable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good alternative. 11 Jan 2012
By Geordie
I'm not long back from a months trekking in Nepal, just before I went, I bought the Digital King wide angle lens for my Nikon DSLR.
Being a keen photographer, and not wanting to take loads of lenses,i tried this product, and have to say I was very pleased with the results.
Being a cheaper option than a wide angle lens proper,it goes well with most varied lenses, and I'm pleased with my photos, all taken in RAW format.
