Review

"As we′ve come to expect from the books in this series, the design is excellent, offering an easy introduction" (Digital SLR Photography, September 2009)

Product Description

An all–new guide that shows photographers how to explore the eerily beautiful world of infrared images

By adding a filter to the camera lens, digital photographers can capture infrared (IR) images featuring brooding skies, dramatic clouds, and bright white instead of green. Illustrated with hundreds of striking IR images taken around the world, this unique guide shows photographers how to get started and get creative with IR. It covers IR basics as well as imaginative techniques that produce eye–catching images–things like long exposures, multiple exposures, and image enhancement with coloring, mirroring, toning, and layering as well as HDR, Photoshop Photomerge, and other Photoshop tools. The book also includes a Gallery of Friends that showcases IR work from top photographers such as Joe Farace and Russell Hart, plus end–of–chapter assignments.

Deborah Sandidge (Orlando, FL) is a director and board member of the Orlando Camera Club and guest instructor at the Harmon School of Photography in Orlando. She is also Creative Director for the League of Infrared Photographers (www.irleague.com). Her photos have appeared in gallery exhibits and in several instructional books and magazines.

beginning to end 6 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been dabbling in infrared photography for a couple of years, starting with an R72 filter and then progressing to having a second hand Nikon D70 converted to infrared only. Joe Farace's book on infrared photography is a great oversight to the subject but is too general. Deborah Sandige takes you from interested beginner through to a skilled photographer in IR, using advanced techniques such as HDR, gels and Photoshop.

Deb Sandige's book is outstanding. This is not an overly technical book. Yes there has to be discussion of nanometres and White Balance but this is the precursor to letting you loose on the world of infrared photography. There is a chapter on indoor IR photography, something I'd never considered. In addition she uses HDR (High Dynamic Range) with IR to create some stunning shots.

If like me you're no expert in Photoshop she guides you through Channel Mixing, and other techniques and filters to further enhance your IR photography. You can also upload your assignments (one at the end of each chapter) to a website for review.

I can confirm what the previous reviewer said - she does respond to your IR queries.

I love this book and am so pleased I bought it. It has helped me to think about shooting thematically as well as to use HDR and indoor shooting. Can't wait for the rain to stop so I can get out shooting.

A comprehensive guide 26 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is a wealth of ideas for anyone who wants to shoot more than just trees and grass. I have other books on infrared photography, but this was the most informative by far. It is full of tips on using IR creatively, and also showcases the work of several photographers and includes a useful list of resources in the appendix.
