About the Author

Peter J. Ashenden received his B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He was previously a senior lecturer in computer science and is now a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide. His research interests are computer organization and electronic design automation. Dr. Ashenden is also an independent consultant specializing in electronic design automation (EDA). He is actively involved in IEEE working groups developing VHDL standards, is the author of The Designer's Guide to VHDL and The Student's Guide to VHDL and co-editor of the Morgan Kaufmann series, Systems on Silicon. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

VHDL is a very specialised language, for the realm of designing digital circuits. The book is a comprehensive explanation of VHDL. Requiring little prior knowledge of analog circuitry. The assumption of "good" digital behaviour by the circuits is a great simplifying step, as you might appreciate if you come from an analog design background.

The book walks through the basics of Boolean circuits. Which act as the basis for more complex combinational circuits. A familiar path in an digital design book. Where here, in each section, the appropriate VHDL instructions are given, to lay out the circuits.

The bulk of the text is due to the different classes of chips that are covered. From memory to I/O to buses. What you might want to focus on is not so much each chip type, but various design methodologies. Especially design to test. Very practical in today's level of chip complexity.
