The first impression of a rather slender volume is misleading; the book contains plenty of detail and some useful references. As a beginner to DCC but with a technology background, I found the guidance on selection of system and initial set up useful, especially when followed up by visiting supplier web sites. As an 'armchair modeller' who is contemplating a return to railway modelling as a serious hobby I found the book valuable as a starting point.

I am planning a fairly large and complex protypical layout and DCC was a given. It will have circa 50 turnouts and the thought of building a control panel for them and having to install some form of cab control for circa 25 locos was the decider. As this is the first DCC venture I have made, and living in a non-MR country, local moral support and suppliers are virtually non existant. The book was a good buy, it has got me into the vocabulary, the diagrams and explanations are good as are some of the tips. To balance that on the negative side, it devotes too much content to chipping your locos, a separate volume on that subject would be beneficial for those who are determined to DIY chipping. Its a bit light on accessory decoders and how to bus-up your layout for DDC. All in all a good start point, any recommendations to balance off the negatives?

What an absolute breeze this book is. Ian Morton is a well known, highly respected contributor to many things Railway Modelling and this book will not disappoint. Readable text. Good diagrams, pictures and explanations and an absolute MUST for the confident, and unconfident DCC expert!
Highly recommended reading.
Well explained.

The book is a mix. There is a lot of useful information in there for people who are getting involved in DCC. There is also a lot of old information which is not of use though which has brought down my rating.

A brilliant book full of well written chapters with photos to match and the best type of model rail reference.
