Product Description

Product Description

High end digital cinematography can truly challenge the film camera in many of the technical, artistic and emotional aspects of what we think of as 'cinematography'. This book is a guide for practising and aspiring cinematographers and DOPs to digital cinematography essentials - from how to use the cameras to the rapidly emerging world of High Definition cinematography and 24p technology.

This book covers the `on-the-set' knowledge you need to know - its emphasis lies in practical application, rather than descriptions of technologies, so that in this book you will find usable `tools' and information to help you get the job done. From `getting the look' to lighting styles and ratios, what is needed for different types of shoots and the technical preparation required, this is a complete reference to the knowledge and skills required to shoot high end digital films. The book also features a guide to the Sony DVW in-camera menus - showing how to set them up and how they work - a
device to save you time and frustration on set.

Paul Wheeler is a renowned cinematographer/director of photography and trainer, he runs courses on Digital Cinematography at the National Film & Television School and has lectured on the Royal College of Art's MA course and at The London International Film School. He has been twice nominated by BAFTA for a Best Cinematography award and also twice been the winner of the INDIE award for Best Digital Cinematography.

This is definately not a Digi-for-dummies book, expecting the reader to be working as a broadcast professional or at least have a basic knowledge of camerawork, but it takes you deep into the digital video world explaining terms and techniques which would otherwise cost a lot time, money and embarassment to learn. Even if you don't get the chance to work with top-end equipment you'll definately learn a lot. A superb book worth spending time reading carefully. Paul Wheeler is a teacher who can! and now, so can you!

A Work Book 19 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
A great book for any cameraperson (or assistant) wanting to make full use of Digital Betacam. Paul Wheeler tells you how he uses the medium and the procedures that he goes through on a production. Many of these can also be used on other Digital formats. It's one weak area is that of lenses and options available, together with the problems that particular lens models can give you when working on high end productions. It's not really for people just starting out and there are many books dealing with lighting etc.in much greater detail.

A book which has the potential to be very useful, however there is one BIG drawback, it is aimed squarely at users of two Sony Cameras - the DVW700 and DVW790.

The style is very readable, and there is quite a lot of useful information here if you can get past the references to the Sony cameras everywhere. Take the section on "the look of your film". Rather than discussing general film looks and how to achieve them the author spends more time on how to use the looks included in the Sony cameras.

A great Sony DVW manual but there are better cinematography books out there.

Disappointing.
