Product Description

For junior/senior introductory communication systems courses for engineering students or an introductory graduate course.

Exceptionally up-to-date, this text provides balanced coverage of both digital and analog communication systems with an emphasis on the design of digital communication systems. It provides students with a working knowledge of both classical mathematical and personal computer methods to analyze, design, and simulate modern communication systems. MATLAB is integrated throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for those who need a communication's reference, 14 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Digital and Analog Communication Systems (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book that explains the fundamentals of digital and analogue communications.

As with most recommended texts, the usefulness of the book depends largely on the course that one undertakes. Personally, Couch's book proved very helpful as an aid to revision, explaining most of the difficult concepts in communications.

An interesting feature of this edition is that it describes some of the latest developments in communications, including GSM.

The book devotes a chapter to the mathematical base of modern communications. I found, however, that most of the maths was beyond my capability to understand - but did not inhibit the usefulness of this text, to any significant extent.

A key feature of all technical books should be worked examples of typical problems - and Couch's book is no exception, providing ample detail to most of his solutions.

"Digital and Analog Communication Systems" is a great book, providing all the features that one would expect from a book on this diverse subject.

In my rating it loses a star since it is a student's book at a non-student price!

2.0 out of 5 stars A complete book, but lacks structure, 19 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Digital and Analog Communication Systems (Hardcover)
If you look at the contents, you'll see that book is extemely complete. It contains all aspects of modern telecommuncation and gives a very thorough base on the mathematical theory.

Looking at the structure, I found it very hard to see the structure in this book: if you want to find something, you will have to extract the pieces out of more chapters. On some points this book gives examples and facts that, I think, really aren't interesting or relevant and sometimes you must be a telecommuncationsfreak to get through the loads of text.

Conclusion:

If you have lots of time and you are very interested in telecommunications, you can use this book to study all of telecommunications. If you're just focussing on some subjects, you'll have a hard time in gathering the pieces and understanding it in short time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Digital and Analog Communication Systems, 11 Feb 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Digital and Analog Communication Systems (Hardcover)
This book is not clearly written. The discussion on Fourier and other math topics is a review, but if you knew those topics before you will be confused by the time you finish. There is often too little information in the text to answer the questions at the end of the chapter.

2.0 out of 5 stars confusing, 26 Jan 2007
By engineering student "confused" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Digital and Analog Communication Systems (Hardcover)
I had to use this book for one of my undergrad classes. It was not at all helpful. The material is presented in a very boring fashion with not enough explanation to do any hw problems on the material. The least it could do is do some examples that actually show you how they got the solution. The instructor did not help much either which made me hate communications.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not useful at all, 20 Nov 2008
By Kambiz Agahian "Sr. Network Architect (CCIE R&S)" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Digital and Analog Communication Systems (Hardcover)
I was hoping to find it sort of "full of well explained examples" resource, yet at this stage almost one year after passing the subject I believe this purchase was "unnecessary". For some reasons, the author keeps trying to "complexify" the topics which essentially are complex enough by themselves! while looking up if you're lucky you will see a short example of the topic that you're looking for and this happens like every 10 pages. Failure in digging into the topics and failure in explaining the issues with a simple language are the most significant problems that we experienced during the semester when using this book. I believe this subject needs a book with lots of examples and short but effective and right to the point explanations which sadly this book did not have.
