3.0 out of 5 stars Works but... 6 Sep 2012
By j
Verified Purchase
Be aware this item has no voltage regulator.
I recommend you only use rechargeable batteries, as this 'should' keep the voltage below the level that can cause damage to your equipment.

Background

USB is 5v, 4 x AA 1.5v batteries is 6v.
Any usb device shouldn't really get more that 5.25v
Even with rechargable batteries the voltage measures was 5.75v
I use it with Hybrio low-discharge rechargables

Pros

On/off switch
power led

1.0 out of 5 stars htc, no good 29 July 2012
By rodders
I bought this product for my htc wildfire and within 1 second of plugging it in a warning came up on my phone saying to disconnect before the.connecting charger caused damage to my phone. Hence, I did not plug it back in and I'm disappointed with my purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with my Motorola phone 15 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
I bought this as a charger for my Motorola Defy+ (Android) smart phone. Unfortunately it does not work - nothing happens when I connect it to the phone and switch it on. I've tried it with 1.2V rechargeable batteries and with 1.5V disposable Energizer Lithium ones - no response from the phone in either case. The green LED on the charger does come on, but this is a highly misleading indicator, since it is only connected across two of the batteries (I can remove two batteries on one side of the charger and the LED stays on!). Basically this charger is just a very expensive 3V green LED, with redundant storage space for two further batteries. Maybe it works better with other phones, but not mine.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not work with HTC Desire 21 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase
Doh! Bought one of these for Glastonbury... arrived on time today.. excellent. Does not charge my HTC Desire. Bogus.

Please post a more comprehensive compatibility list. It seems a bit of a gamble as to whether it will work or not with certain phones. As description states "does not work with iphone, ipad, itouch"... this kind of implies that it *does* work with other phones. Handy knowing it doesn't work with Apple stuff, but I don't have Apple stuff, we're not all Appletards you know.

Anyhoo.... The little box does charge my rechargable 'ted baker' battery pack, which in turn does charge my phone... so all is not lost, I'll just take an extra bag with me for all the cables.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with Sony mp3 player 19 Jun 2011

As someone else has mentioned here. Doesn't charge with a Sony NWZ-A816 mp3 player, which will charge fine from a Lupo mains plug to USB adapter

3.0 out of 5 stars Required modifications for my application 25 Sep 2011
By Jimbo
Under the sticky label, there is a minature x-head screw. Remove this screw. The two halves of the unit's body come apart with some leverage by a thumbnail.
The +ve power cable is RED. The -ve cable is BLACK, as per std USB pinout details. Take a photo with your phone camera ( to keep a record of what it was like before dissembly ) and unsolder both cables.

My application requires a mini-USB male connector. Cut to length and strip back the sheathing, braiding and insulation from a std USB mini-USB patch cable.

Use a tiny-tiny cable tie ( zip-clip ) round the new USB cable to act as an anchor inside the unit's body when the two body halves are back together. Pull V tight.

Solder the RED wire to the ajoined Switch terminals and the BLACK wire to where the original BLACK wire was soldered.

At this point, it is a wise move to give the battery -ve terminal springs a stretch because they are a tad short 'as delivered' and the batteries waggled around and lost contact frequently.

Making sure the zip-clip is inside the body halves, give the cable appature a dab of silicone sealer ( black looks best ) for weather proofing and snap the body halves back together. Replace screw and sticky label.

I now have a 5V Battery Pack with a mini-USB for a SatNav on my Bicycle !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Portable Power On The Go. 26 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase
Coupled with 4 AA rechargeable high 2900 AMh batteries, this device was able to recharge my Samsung Galaxy S smartphone fully 2 times. Never be without power again when using your smartphone, gps, camera etc on days when you're out and about and not near a power supply. Highly recommended as a cheap yet efficient recharging solution.
UPDATE!
The cable broke after continued use. This is due to poor storage and handling of tge device but please note the cable is a weak point.
