Tiny, but great!, 5 July 2007
This review is from: Digidesign MBOX 2 MINI Pro Tools Audio Interface (Electronics)
I've got a bigger Pro Tools system in my studio (002), but I needed something portable to take out with my laptop so I can edit on the move. Once again Digi came up with the goods in the form of this little monster!
As with any other Digidesign product it comes with the Pro Tools software (as well as a load of extra plug-ins and bits) and the audio interface - this is the smallest thing they've ever done. It's got 2 inputs (one mic, one line, so if I need to I can record a guitar and a singer on the move), stereo outputs and a headphone out (which is all I really use if for). It's solidly built so I can throw it in my laptop bag with no worry of damaging it. The most amazing thing is that I can be sitting in my studio recording a band on my 002 in the morning, editing it on the train with my laptop and Mbox Mini in the afternoon, then then in the evening mixing it in my mates Pro Tools HD studio.
This is perfect for any one starting out in any kind of recording/editing/mixing - Pro Tools is used in pretty much every pro studio and you can use it for just over £200, how cool is that!?

True quality and performance, 15 Jan 2010

I've had many "professional" and "pro" soundcards, internal and external. After a wave of Soundblasters, I decided to go for EMU 1212m (internal) and later for an external EMU 0202 USB. I've been disappointed by them also, because if you are looking forward to make music, their ASIO outputs will not be as good as the MBox2. You will constantly struggle for resources, and if you want high quality real-time sound, it's not possible. You will downsize the sample rates; reduce the number of channels... overall you will end up by limiting your imagination. I have Intel Quad core CPU Q6600, so the latency was not coming from the processor, it was coming from the sound processing.
I mainly bought Mbox2 because I was very curious about Protools, but I ended up by using my old Fruity Loops instead, because I am much more familiar with it. When I switched to the ASIO Digidesign Driver my music came back to life. I suddenly have no limitations, I can use as many channels as I want, and I am using higher sample rates in real-time, which is amazing. The plugins sound better, everything sounds better. There is no static noise coming from the device, the sound is crystal clear, and very high quality - I have a pair of Sennheiser HD650 which don't lie, the sound that's coming out of the Mbox2 is very good.
I had no issues with Protools either, it works very well with my Vista.
Highly recommended if you make music outside of a studio.

the MBOX, 7 Jun 2010

great product buts it tiny though. a few hiccups with it but other than that its perfect, Love it think it could be a little cheaper. not impressed with design, original mbox was better and stood up the knobs can be confusing but easy enough to get used to.
