I bought this as a one-time effort to have as many ethnic blues artists as possible in order to put together a blues show for my hospital radio programme. As it turned out, I found the characters, and they ARE characters in the bizarre meaning of the word, fascinating. Their lives, a mixture of violence, poverty, riches, infirmities, recognition, obscurity...makes for great reading. Questionable as lives go, but gripping stuff. If you want an instant blues collection, but largely ancient re-mastered recordings from the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, then this set is the way to go. Many of the records are in the Library of Congress as significant in social and artistic terms. You'll have some favorites, and some tracks will make you wonder why someone thought they were good! But from Bessie Smith to Memphis Minnie, there's blues for everyone here.

This fine collection served me as an introduction to the blues greats and if that is what you want then you can't go wrong. And the experience was very enjoyable, it helped me develop a keen interest in chicago blues and lightnin hopkins. The recordings can be off in places but very rarely and these are old tracks so it is to be expected. Also you can get this album for under a fiver from a 3rd party, 200 tracks for 500 pennies! Cant go wrong, 5/5

Just a fabulous collection and brilliant value. About 20, mainly pre WW2 artists are featured; some are stellar names-Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters ,Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Big Bill Broonzy- some are known mainly to blues fans, for instance Mississippi John Hurt, John Lee Hooker,( back in the day, when he played solo-great!)Blind Willie McTell, Arthur Crudup(fab!) Bukka White, Memphis Minnie, Kokomo Arnold, Brownie McGhee and Lightnin' Hopkins. Sound quality is extremely clear and the selection provides a wide variety of music that isn't just "interesting", it's really enjoyable. Quite a bargain and if you like all sorts of blues from Delta to boogie piano from roughly the mid '30s to 1950-this is for you!

As a keen follower of the blues this is a real treasure trove. A mixture of well known standards and more obscure gems.
