Product Description

Product Description

We all find ourselves in difficult situations where we need to tread lightly - or deal with the consequences, but how often do we say nothing - or say too much? This book aims to help the reader to step back from their own emotions, remain calm and work out the right thing to say. It has practical advice and examples ranging from "difficult" discussions with your partner, friends and family, to salespeople, bosses and collegues, showing first the wrong way - and then the right way - to get through those tricky times.

About the Author

Anne Dickson is a psychologist, writer and trainer with many years' experience of teaching communication skills and management of emotions. She is the author of several books, including the bestseller A Woman in Your Own Right.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to read, clear, simple, practical, 8 Oct 2009
By Ms. F. C. Reed - See all my reviews

This book offers a really solid basic introduction to difficult conversations - and its a much needed guide since most of us find raising and negotiating points of difference / annoyance really hard. It challenges you on reasons and consequences for avoiding difficult conversations, and also gives you really clear simple steps to discussing and resolving things. I particularly liked that she has a moral framework for this, although she doesnt go on about it: avoiding the moral cowardice that comes when we DONT challenge each other, and avoiding the blowup that comes when we have taken too long to raise something. Very easy to read, very clear, practical, easy to take out and use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the cover., 27 Jun 2008

Helpful, step by step advice on dealing with many difficult situations. A simple (but effective) approach that gets the message across without fudging the issues but without escalating the situation. A number of useful examples of how to apply the advice. Recommended.

I found this book to be esxtremely helpful in a recent conversation I had with a friend. I consider it to be like a really practical guide that I can use as a refresher time and again. Wish there were more books like this.
