This is a great book which rewards with repeated reads. Van den Berg takes phenomenology and critiques psychoanalysis, while at the same time building a positive new approach based on his own theory of metabletics. This theory is discussed in more detail in other books which are also highly recommended (Divided Existence and Complex Society; Changing Nature of Man). But this is Van den Berg at his most accessible and most cogent.
