Product Description

SPECIAL MENTION TES/NASEN BEST ACADEMIC BOOK AWARD

`Anna has written a very descriptive book of her feeling and the difficult times she went through as she struggled with anorexia. The book gives advice, recovery ideas and encouragement for those who suffer eating disorders' - International Woman

`I enjoyed her style of writing and would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in eating disorders' - Signpost

`Provides a valuable insight into how a young person with an eating disorder thinks and feels' - Contact a Family

`The style is clear and engaging and ought to reach young people who are experiencing difficulties. The level of information contained would be of equal value to the families of these young people in helping them understand the emotions of their loved ones' - Educational Psychology

Looking in the bathroom mirror for the first time since my illness had begun, I saw how I really looked. I was a walking skeleton, with my skin stretched tight over my bones. My face had become a skull, and when I smiled, it looked like I was wearing a horror mask.

Anna has suffered a serious eating disorder and, more importantly, she has recovered!

In this book she provides the reader with:

" a moving account of her experiences

" information about eating disorders

" a plan for recovery

" HOPE.

The book is intended for young people and their families, and all those who care for children at risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener, 9 Aug 2002
This review is from: Diet of Despair: A Book about Eating Disorders for Young People and their Families (Lucky Duck Books) (Paperback)
This is the self help book that I always wished had been around when I was younger and felt alone. One written sympathetically and with great clarity from someone on the inside who really knows how it feels. (The author herself is an abuse and neglect survivor who suffered from anorexia for most of her life). And the positivity contained in this book is so refreshing.

Tackling the real issues that sufferers need to know about (from how to cut down on laxatives to learning how to live at a higher weight) this was as comprehensive as I had hoped it might be from her previous track record.

I can only hope that this helps spread genuine understanding about these appalling illnesses and how to put them into reverse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, 4 Aug 2002
This review is from: Diet of Despair: A Book about Eating Disorders for Young People and their Families (Lucky Duck Books) (Paperback)
Diet is a remarkable book for lots of reasons.

On a personal level, I was delighted to see that it addressed overeating (my own personal issue) with as much seriousness and care as anorexia and bulimia. It felt very hopeful throughout and provided me with many new ideas and positive approaches to my own condition.

On a wider level, it helped me to understand that other eating disorders and their root causes. It left me with a much deeper understanding of disorders that (while they may appear to be very different on the surface) are actually very similar to my own.

The care and thoughtfulness throughout this book is remarkable and the practical approach it tales to recovery is very admirable.

A book that will help a great many people.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first self help book I have read that offers hope, 4 July 2002
This review is from: Diet of Despair: A Book about Eating Disorders for Young People and their Families (Lucky Duck Books) (Paperback)
This is the first helpful book on this subject I have ever read. It is factual but unlike other books of this type, it draws you in as the author reflects back on her own life and ties her diary extracts into what you are reading. This turns a self help book into a compelling read that actually offered me some hope and encouragement and has helped me try again to face up to my illness and plan for recovery.
