This isn't a bad book and the majority of photos are new however some have been published before. There are some interesting ones including a mechanical DMU on a mid-70's holiday special on the Southern. My main criticism is the fact that Cross consistently uses EXACTLY the same format for his captions throughout the book ie location, date, loco, and when loco was finally withdrawn. I agree this is interesting and useful information but I found the predictability of the captions a bit irritating after a while. If you like captions that inform you on more than just the loco in the picture, I have always found that John Spencer Gilks cannot be improved upon, the originality and unusual nature of many of his captions (such as what he had for tea, that he fell in some stinging nettles on his way to take the picture etc etc, as well as the railway scene) cannot be beaten.
Having said that I do like the 'Colour Album' style and layout, and Derek Cross, Dick Riley and others have left us superb modern traction picture collections that should be shared with those who are interested through books such as this. I am sure it is what they would have wanted.
