Book Description

30 Sep 2006 Colour Portfolio
Following the Modernisation Plan of 1955, the railways were in transition from one dominant form of traction to another. Inevitably, one of the areas that saw early moves toward modern traction was London. This collection of photographs covers a wide selection of the diesel motive power which was working in and around London, both Locomotives and multiple units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, as ever 15 Aug 2007
By A. Betts VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I guess my only slight criticism of this wonderful album is that several of the photographs have appeared elsewhere and that he perhaps ran out of steam by the time he reached the Southern. That said, this is a fantastic book which maintains the high quality of the family work. I eagerly await Volume 2....

5.0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait 3 July 2007
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Wonderful pictures of diesel traction around the london termini cira 1960-1980's.
There are a selection of pictures at each major London termini.
There is even a picture at kings cross without a Deltic in it which is so refreshing. As are the pictures of some of the more obscure class's
An excellent addition to the railway section of my bookcase

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but couple of criticisms 4 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
This isn't a bad book and the majority of photos are new however some have been published before. There are some interesting ones including a mechanical DMU on a mid-70's holiday special on the Southern. My main criticism is the fact that Cross consistently uses EXACTLY the same format for his captions throughout the book ie location, date, loco, and when loco was finally withdrawn. I agree this is interesting and useful information but I found the predictability of the captions a bit irritating after a while. If you like captions that inform you on more than just the loco in the picture, I have always found that John Spencer Gilks cannot be improved upon, the originality and unusual nature of many of his captions (such as what he had for tea, that he fell in some stinging nettles on his way to take the picture etc etc, as well as the railway scene) cannot be beaten.

Having said that I do like the 'Colour Album' style and layout, and Derek Cross, Dick Riley and others have left us superb modern traction picture collections that should be shared with those who are interested through books such as this. I am sure it is what they would have wanted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good photos throughout 9 Jun 2012
By Mr G
Format:Hardcover
Depicts all the London terminii before they were redesigned to look like shopping malls for yuppies. Every region is covered and the sheer variety of motive power is impressive to say the least.
London's stations may have been a bit run down in those post war years but at least the locomotives gave them some atmosphere.
