Barry Pickthall - Journalist and Photographer
Barry Pickthall won the 2008 Whyte & Mackay/YJA Journalist of the Year Award. A respected writer and photographer, he has been covering all aspects of the sport for four decades, twenty of them (1978-1998) as Yachting Correspondent to 'The Times' newspaper. He continues to write exclusively for magazines across Europe, USA, South Africa and Australasia.
Barry moved into writing about sailing after training first as a boatbuilder and later as a naval architect with the British research institute, National Physical Laboratories. He has also fully restored his own classic yacht, the 27ft Rhodes designed 6-tonner, Sea Jay. These experiences give him the knowledge to comment authoritatively on the technical aspects of yacht build, design, maintenance and handling, as well as the lifestyle that surrounds the sport.
He has written 18 sailing related textbooks.
