Biography

Jordi Savall is an exceptional figure in todays music world. For more than thirty years he has been devoted to the rediscovery and performance of neglected musical treasures as a soloist and director of his three ensembles. He has restored an essential repertoire to all those with ears to hear it. Except for the happy few who already revere it, the viola da gamba, is an instrument so refined ... Product Description

Product Description

Published in Rome in 1553 and re-discovered during the 20th-Century, the 'Tratado de Glosas' by Spanish composer Diego Ortiz offers, through many variations called 'recercadas', an unmatched panorama of the instrumental music of its time. The reissue of this 1990 album in the Heritage series enables us to listen to one of Jordi Savall s best accomplishments, alongside Ton Koopman and Rolf Lislevand. On various themes, including 'La Folia' and 'Doulce memoire', Diego Ortiz and Jordi Savall demonstrate their science and their spirit of invention for our greatest entertainment!

Review

Whether for the short, four-part suite for solo gamba or the lithe but weighty dances of the final Recercadas sobre tenores the music of Tratado de Glosas is both lyrical and melodically imaginative... A fine album. --Tim Woodall, Early Music Today- December 2013

Perf (5/5) ***** Rec (5/5) ***** 'The virtuoso Jordi Savall surveys Diego Ortiz s treatise on decoration, variation and improvisation. Wonderful.' --Anna Picard, BBC Music Magazine January 2014

Once again, wonderful musicianship from one of the magicians of our times, and a virtuoso of the viola da gamba. Within Jordi Savall's discography, this disc stands out as one of the most visionary, emotive and mystic.

Although not exactly what I had expected, this musical offering was both interesting and intriguing, giving slow atmospheric
movements to lively and upbeat dance tunes. I selected these recordings because they included some of the most prominent
specialists of this age of music, and, naturally period instrumentation. Certainly rounds out my collection of Renaissance music
from this hitherto little known composer.

Soothing, sophisticated music under excellent guidance of Jordi Savall. Wonderfully representative of its era. I would recommend to anyone who likes this baroque style.

Explore the birth of tonal harmony 18 Sept. 2013
By Michael Schell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Ortiz' Recercadas del Tratado de Glosas (1553), or "Ricercars on grounds", is an important collection of instrumental works featuring some of the earliest surviving (that is, written) examples of harmony-based music. The organizing standard for many of these pieces is a short, repeating chord progression, with elaborations above them that were probably models for improvisation. Eventually these forms would grow into the more elaborate variation-based chaconnes and passacaglias associated with later composers such as Bach and even Brahms.

If you're reading the Oxford History of Western Music, there are several cited examples present in this recording. The first track comprises "Tres recercadas sobre tenores" and the third, on the Passamezzo moderno, is Taruskin's Ex. 15-13. Note the characteristic IV-V-I cadence. Taruskin considers this to be the earliest truly tonal music to be preserved though its genre probably goes back quite some time before. Certainly this is some of the earliest surviving "Baroque"-sounding music. The grounds are short enough that the entire piece is underpinned by a repeating harmonic progression (not just the random succession of modal harmonies that you get in the non-cadential passages of "ars perfecta" works), and the accompaniment features struck/strummed chords as "independent perceptual units" (Taruskin) and not as simply the result of the voice leading.

Track 4 gives seven recercadas on the La Spagna progression. This is Taruskin's Ex. 15-11, and the order is Taruskin's 2, 3, 1, 4, 5 and 6. This music still sounds a bit more old-style, intended as examples of how a viol player might improvise over a cantus firmus derived from a bassadanza (rather than a repeating ground).

The Romanesca given in Track 7 is ostensibly Taruskin's Ex. 15-12b though there are departures from the strict rendering there. Other grounds from Ex. 15-12 are in this track, and the "quinta pars" sounds like Taruskin's Ex. 15-12e "Ruggiero" though without the F♮.

This is a fine recording, and I'm glad that it's still available, both on CD and in downloadable form. As unpretentious as this music sounds to us, its implications are staggering for music history, the beginnings of true functional harmony, a kind of thinking that's now ubiquitous worldwide, but which had not materialized anywhere until many centuries of polyphonic alchemy let it to burst forth in high Renaissance Europe.

The Consolations of Art 4 April 2014
By Jan Klaar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is exquisite music -- tender, yearning, melancholy, wise, accepting, quietly joyous -- perfectly performed and recorded in an intimate acoustic. The interplay between viola da gamba and softly burbling baroque organ, the variety of moods captured by a small ensemble, even in what is essentially a set of variations, is miraculous.

It's not for everyone, to be sure, but I've been listening to this disc for 20 years, and I'd be thrilled to know that it's meant as much to someone else as it has to me. I hope it's a wonderful discovery for you. The CD import price is steep, but it's also available inexpensively as an MP3.
