Having always been a fan of Elisabeth Grümmer, I jumped at the chance to get a copy of this elusive recording when discovering that it had been re-released on CD by Gala.
AND......I must say that it is utterly delightful - great sound, considering that this was recorded in 1955. Although it is evident that the spoken dialogue was recorded afterwards and spliced into the recording, it still is a fine achievement.
The singers: Grümmer is (as always) a dream, her voice is that of an angel come to Earth, clear, warm and urgent - such a pity that so few recordings with her exist.
The rest of the cast are great too, the only flaw being Erika Köth's rather impersonal Queen of the Night - the arias are perfectly picthed but with no rage or expression which should properly befit the Queen and which is present in other recordings with, for instance, Edda Moser and Lucia Popp.
Considering also the extensive informative notes on the opera and singers: All-in-all well worth the price - BRAVO GALA !
