Die Physiker follows one day in the Asylum of Fraulein Doktor von Zahnd, with her three charges, the physicists Newton, Einstein and Mobius. The play opens with a murder and the subsequent investigation, through which Inspektor Voss uncovers many truths about the three inhabitants.
Ultimately this play discusses the responsibility of the scientist to the human-race, with particular reference to the atom bomb, dropped only a few years before the play was written. Mobius is clearly the good-guy in this respect, believing the scientific community to have total responsibility for their discoveries and their effects or possible abuse by society. Along the way the three grapple with power and freedom-the power to claim responsibility, or give it up, and the power knowledge gives you; the freedom to pursue your science without interference from industry, politics or the military.
Durrenmatt believed there to be no more tragedies- perhaps explaining why Die Physiker is titled a comedy, despite its pathos. There is great comedy here though- Mobius' psalm in his spacecraft-cum-upturned-table; Newton's full period costume; Inspektor Voss' desperation for a drink throughout; and the hunchback Fraulein Doktor. Look out for a recorder trio and King Solomon!

Well-crafted, funny yet thoughtful play about madness, physics and ethics, with a satisfying twist at the end. Durrenmatt was a genius. Best to read in the original German.
