Kraftwerk - The Catalogue

Biography

Kraftwerk (German pronunciation: [ˈkʀaftvɛʁk]), German for power plant or power station, is an electronic music band from Düsseldorf, Germany. The group was formed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in 1970, and was fronted by them until Schneider's departure in 2008. The signature Kraftwerk sound combines driving, repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies, mainly following a Western Classical… Read more in Amazon's Kraftwerk Store

Perfect. 24 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
Essentially, it's 'The Man Machine' but in German (the music is identical). This means that 'The Model' scans and rhymes properly, but at the same time 'Neon Lights' isn't quite as effective, as the fragile vocal delivery of the English version is lost. And that's it, really. It's neither better nor worse than the English version - the German delivery perhaps makes it more 'authentic', but less of a singalong-knees-up, unless you speak German. Note that 'Radioactivity', 'Electric Cafe' and 'Computer World' were also Germanified in this way, and indeed 'Cafe' was Spanishified too.

A masterpiece from Germany 8 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD

"Die Mensch Maschine" still holds up today 3 July 2002
By Roger Williams - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Kraftwerk has been often imitated, yet never duplicated. In today's age of lifeless electronic music, Kraftwerk's icy, almost stereotypically sterile Teutonic sound has, ironically, aged so well as to sound like a breath of fresh air in the 21st century.

"Die Mensch Maschine" doesn't revolve around a central theme as do some of their earlier albums, but is something of a commentary to the modern age (such as it was in the late 1970's) and the "constructionist" art movement (in particular, the late Soviet artist El Lissitzky).

This is the original German language recording, and frankly, doesn't vary in any appreciable way from the English language recording in any other regard. The outer space funk (is it possible that Kraftwerk are simply Parliament-Funkadelic from another dimension?) of "Die Roboter" and "Das Modell" are strong points, while the atmospheric "Neonlicht" gives you some breathing space before the angular finale of the title track. Whether you listen to it in German or English, fans of techno and electronic music can't go wrong here.
