The best stereo or digital Meistersinger 5 Dec. 2011
By madamemusico - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
After having bought the second Solti recording and having heard the somewhat overrated Kubelik recording, my traversal of all modern recordings of "Meistersinger" came to an end. Or did it? Suddenly, I discovered this out-of-print EMI recording from 1994, conducted by someone I've always admired (Sawallisch) and featuring a luxury cast of Studer, Heppner, Weikl, Moll and van der Walt. René Pape is even present here as the Night Watchman, and the great Canadian tenor Michael Schade is Vogelgesang! But of course, the cast in and of itself would mean nothing if the performance had no "life," as so many modern "Meistersingers" sound to me.

Happily, this one is simply magical. Playing it at home, someone said to me, "I though this WAS a live performance!" Yes, it's that good. Everyone sounds alive and alert, and Sawallisch leads the most heartfelt, lightly dancing, conversational performance that I've heard since the old Rudolf Kempe (EMI) recording. He did this by rehearsing bits of each day's material for an hour with piano, then spending 6 hours recording scenes at his leisure in 9-12-minute-long segments. But then the bad news...it's no longer in print! Note to "Meistersinger" fans: grab this one while you can. There's also an unexpected bonus. In addition to great singing and vocal acting, all of the principals who have trills actually SING them! And that includes Hans Sachs, who I didn't even know had a trill (it's in the third act, near the beginning of CD 4). Oh yes, the trills are important. Wagner built his musical style on Italian bel canto, and he loved trills, thought they added to the humor and/or drama of a situation, and wrote them into his scores. So what are you waiting for? Grab this one before all the copies are gone!
Interesting but boring also. 16 May 2013

The music is somewhat repetitive, though in many places it is excellent. I find no fault with the performance. the artists were very accurate in their work.

The ol' Sachs Sucks syndrome strikes again.................. 15 Jan. 2012
By Peter M. Rossetti - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'd like to edit my post after further listening and say that Weikl's Sachs isn't that bad. Better sounding than Adam or VanDam, but not better sung. So 4.5 stars now. Solti's act endings still provide more chills, but this version has the better voices.
