Amazon.co.uk Review

Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan, Die Hard made Bruce Willis a star back in 1988 and established a new template for action stories. Here the bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis' visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis' wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter.

Director Renny Harlin took the reins for the 1990 sequel, Die Harder, which places Bruce Willis in harm's way again with a gaggle of terrorists. This time, Willis awaits his wife's arrival at Dulles Airport in Washington DC when he gets wind of a plot to blow up the facility. Noisy, overbearing and forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story; and it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension. Where Die Hard sets new precedents in action movies, Die Hard 2 is just an anything-goes spectacle. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Stunning Box Set 22 Sep 2002
Format:DVD
What can be said about Die Hard that hasn't already been said? Simply put it is one of the greatest action movies of the 1980s and it firmly placed Bruce Willis on the road to stardom. It all starts when John McClane (Willis), a cop from New York travels to Los Angeles to visit his family for Christmas. John stops off for a surprise visit at his wife's workplace, the recently erected Nakatomi Plaza. Trouble ensues when a group of European terrorists (led by the excellent Alan Rickman) seize the building and take everyone (except for McClane, of course) hostage. Armed only with a pistol and some cocky one-liners, it is now up to John McClane to stop the terrorists and save Christmas. The film boasts solid action as well as laugh-out-loud comedy and endlessly quotable dialogue. Die Hard is a true action classic with quality that withstands on infinite viewings. A great film to watch for any occasion.

The sequel, Die Hard 2 is slightly disappointing in contrast to the original but still provides solid entertainment. The film starts on Christmas Eve (again) one year later, only this time in Washington DC. McClane arrives at Dellis International Airport to pick up his wife who's on her way from Los Angeles. Things take an unexpected turn when a group of ex-military terrorists take control of the airport to negotiate the release of a drug lord. Once again, it is up to John McClane to stop the bad guys. Die Hard 2 lacks some of the humour of the original and isn't quite as exciting, but makes still makes an above average companion and an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

The 2 discs worth of extras in this set are fantastic. The extra disc to the first film offers a unique interactive insight into the editing process of the motion picture. The best part of this disc is easily the scene editing workshop where the viewer can cut together his/her own version of one of the scenes in the movie with alternate takes, camera angles and dialogue. Among the other extras for the first film are a commentary, a deleted scene (that can be reinserted into the film), out-takes, original newscast footage, trailers, TV spots, interactive slide show, magazine articles and more. The extra disc for the second film is a bit more routine, but still worthy. Included is a commentary, "making of", deleted scenes, original featurette, interviews, trailers and more.

All in all, an excellent package and a must-have for any action fan. All that is missing is the third film (which Buena Vista own the rights to) that is available for purchase in its own stand-alone two disc set, another highly recommended purchase.

The Die Hard special edition is without a doubt one of the best dvd's available on the region 2 market to date. It is jam packed with extras, on both films. 4 cd's of excellent quality, it will really push your home cinema to the max.
The one problem I found is the absense of the 3rd movie, of which the rights are owned by a different company. Buy Buy Buy !!!
