Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Die Hard 4.0 finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, Dodgeball) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. Die Hard 4.0 uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi

We were a bit wary before we watched this. Die Hards 1 and 2 were excellent but by 3 is was all getting a bit tired and run of the mill. No need to worry; even after all this time 4.0 is seriously entertaining. Some of the action scenes are so fast and hard and in-yer-face that you get breathless just watching it.
The script is plausible (cyber-terrorists bring the USA to a grinding halt for their own devious means), and John McClane has to save the day again. He also has to save a geeky hacker who might be able to unravel the online mayhem, and he has to save his grown up daughter too.

There's guns, there's shooting, there's quick-cut running and driving and shouting and -- heck, there's even a scene where Bruce takes out a helicopter (in mid air) with a car. 'My gun was out of bullets' he says, smirking.
There's plenty of one-liners, punchy dialouge and it all rattles by at a fair old pace. Bruce Willis plays the role well, too; you believe in his age and you can believe that he's just about taking the punishment. Although he doesn't strip down to his vest this time!

Great action movie, nothing too taxing for the brain cells, nothing too scary for younger kids. There's some stand-out fight scenes (especially with the guy who climbs a ventilation shaft like he's some kind of rabbit, and the karate kicking bad girl) and plenty of 'wow!' moments.
Afterwards, you might wonder about some of the plot twists -- but don't think about it too hard. Just sit back and enjoy it.

This, as you have guessed, is the 4th Die Hard movie, coming about a decade after number 3.

Since we last saw John McClane the world has technologically grown up without him. He's an old school cop in a high tech world. The general plot is he is sent to pick up a 'hacker' who is wanted by some terrorists who also want to take over the US using solely technology as their weapon.

The film is 2 hours of action, almost non-stop. Yes you'll need to suspend belief, but it's a Die Hard movie, goes without saying. Personally I really enjoyed this movie and it's great to see Bruce Willis reprise John McClane. Best action movie I've seen this year, so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars die hard 4.0 2disc ultimate action edition 21 Feb 2013

Just received this dvd today and watched it straight away. I can confirm that this is the uncut version with all 'F' bombs and bullet impacts fully restored. Whilst I do prefer the Blu Ray format, I must say that the picture quality and sound is excellent and for what Amazon market sellers are currently charging for it second hand, it's a steal. Grab it while you can.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bruce nukes the fridge 21 Jan 2013
Overall a fairly enjoyable action romp set against the backdrop of a disconcertingly plausible "what if" premise: a massive cyber-terror attack.

Bruce makes a reasonable fist of it and has not yet become an ageing caricature of himself (like VanDamme or Segal for example).

The big let-down for me though were the numerous "fridge-nukings", the most ludicrous of which was the climactic big chase scene involving a semitrailer driven by Bruce and a jet fighter aircraft. That was where plausibility went right out of the window. I know that a "Die Hard" film will always plenty of death-defying stunts. But really - sometimes there are limits to one's suspension of disbelief.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all! 12 Dec 2007

I have to say I went into the cinema not knowing what to expect from this film. I came out with a smile after watching an action film with a relatively decent storyline. The action is the typical OTT Die Hard brand but that's just part of the ride, and the geeky sidekick is a stroke of genius as the two characters balance each other off nicely. WEll worth watching if you like your action films larger than life

5.0 out of 5 stars Textbook action movie 18 Nov 2007
Beautifully paced, well scripted and with some quite extraordinary photography, there is no good reason for this thriller to be a 'Die Hard' movie. But what Bruce Willis brings to the film is - put simply - pain. When Matt Damon or one of those other youngsters takes a knock, they're back on their feet in no time. Watching NYPD detective John McClane whine and curse about his injuries adds a welcome level of realism you rarely see these days.

Alongside Willis, the photography is the other star of this piece. Outstanding dolly-shots in traffic compete with ambitious CG sequences to out-wow each other. The effect is mesmerising.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but not a keeper 11 Nov 2007
By i wrote this TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
This movie sits comfortably alongside Die Hard 2 as an above average action movie with plenty of spectacle and wit but not much that will stay with you after the end credits roll.
The film represents an interesting (but slightly irritating) departure from the Hollywood action block buster formula where the generic action hero survives on his wits: He/she finds solutions to problems in the blink of any eye and out wit baddies with a mix lightening reflexes and smarts. (e.g.Die Hard hero John McClane used to tape guns to his back, fire blanks at police chiefs, etc).
But in Die Hard 4.0 John McClane is almost totally witless and only manages to win the day through a mix of stubborn courage and dumb luck. Maybe this is a subtle metaphor for American foreign policy? Probably not...
The last `money shot' involves McClane surviving a shown down between a jet fighter and a truck which destroys an entire section of freeway. How does he do it? Dumb luck. A formula that had really started to grate on me by this point in the film.
One last comment: Justin "Hi, I'm a mac" Long gives a really enjoyable performance. I hope we get to see him in some more prominent roles in the future. Kevin Smith is as useless as ever. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a great feisty heroine.

Although bought by mistake this is still a great action film. Battered, bruised but still battling - typically enjoyable Willis.
