This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank) and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. On Christmas Eve, New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) is visiting his estranged wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) in Los Angeles, where she works. They are attending a party at Holly's high-rise office block when terrorists, led by the suave Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) break in, taking everyone hostage. McClane manages to evade capture, however, and sets out to rescue his wife and the other prisoners. It is not long before he is running barefoot over shattered glass (ouch!) in a sweaty vest, muttering 'Yippy kay aye' as he dispatches the baddies with bullets and a certain earthy wit.

I looked up action movie in my dictionary and it just said Die Hard.
Die Hard is quit possibly the only movie i can watch over and over again, even though its not a movie geared at making your brain work, it is nonetheless a masterpiece.
The storyline is quite simple, terrorists take over building to nick a shed lad of cash, end of story. Yet the way the story is crafted is a true work of genius and has yet to be matched by director McTiernan.
Yet who can blame him, Die Had set amazingly high standards.

What are the elements of Die Hard that make it successful? I think its the way that this particular action film is very similar to a western in its approach. Just think about it, a lone law enforcer (New York cop) turns up to single-handedly to save a village (skyscraper) from outside forces (terrorists) who threaten to disturb the peace (kill everyone).
Add to this mix explosions, one on one gunfights and some killer wise-cracks from the hero, and you've got yourself the ultimate action film with the ultimate action hero. even the villain is great.
Die Hard is quite possibly my favourite action movie, nothing comes near it, not even the sequels!
A 10/10, 5 star, 2 thumbs up film!

ok then so then its christmas and john mclaine is off to meet his ex wife at her very flashy new office building. all is going well until some european terrorists show up and take over the building and try to break into the buildings vault.
this is where it gets interesting as they hadnt counted on one man army john mclaine to still be running around and over the building picking them off one by one.
and thats pretty much it!!!
bruce willis gets the best lines and gets to be very heroic in his dirty vest blowing stuff up shooting at villains and throwing in random bits of harsh language.
alan rickman gets to personify evil as the leader of the terrorists and chews up the screen as hans gruber
this is quite easily one of the best action thrillers ever made as the set pieces just seem to get bigger and bigger as the film carries on.
yes ok is was never gonna win any oscars but it grabs you by the short and curlies and doesnt let you go until the final credits.
ok its not gonna be for everyone as the bodycount is pretty high but it just rolls on through like a steamroller.
brilliant film...faultlessly executed

A terrific film. One of my all time favourites. The action sequences are superb, and Willis' portrayl of the decent man turned action hero is wonderfully believable. Alan Rickman does an outstanding job as the villian who is rediciously like-able, mainly due to the fact that he kills the most annoying character in this outstanding action masterpiece! This is an essential purchase and well worth any, I mean any list price.

Good...
Typical Bruce movie, lots of guns, blood, baddies, goodies, cops and terrorists. Bought so we could have the whole collection and watch before the latest film comes out.
